48 Hours in Orlando

by Travelbag on 24 February 2015, 13:02PM

The sunshine state of Florida is home to a number of wonderful cities that are just waiting to be explored, and Orlando is one of those. From family holidays to romantic retreats, there is plenty to do and enjoy. Most people think of theme parks and Mickey Mouse and, while this is the big thing to do in “The City Beautiful”, there are other delights on offer.

It is undoubtedly the theme park capital of the world, and attracts the best part of 60 million tourists each and every – giving it the 29th busiest airport in the world and a city built on the tourism industry. Rapid growth hit Orlando in the 1980s and since then it has never looked back as big entertainment parks do battle to gain the interest of visitors in a climate that is mild for much of the year and baking hot in the middle of summer.

From Ripley’s Believe It Or Not to Universal Studios to The Florida Mall, there is a lot to choose from in Orlando. We take a look at how to spend a brief two-day visit to the city.

Day One

Disneyworld – Magic Kingdom Park

Get up early and try to beat the crowds to get into the iconic park in good time. Head straight for the rides you don’t want to miss – like the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and Space Mountain – and get fastpass tickets to them to ensure you aren’t disappointed. Once you have these then it is time to go out and enjoy the park in all its glory. Create memories with your group and be sure to make time for the fabulous Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade that takes place at 3pm each day.

If you’ve ticked all the boxes by mid-afternoon then you can head back to your resort for a breather – just a short trip away if you’re staying in the Epcot area -- or you can continue to enjoy the magic until the spectacular ‘Celebrate the Magic’ show at Cinderella’s castle. Honouring the art of Disney storytelling, this is the only way to end a day at the Magic Kingdom Park as the fireworks show starts at 9:45pm.

Still got some energy? It’s time to head to Downtown Disney for great restaurants, excellent entertainment and themed shops. There are 40 stores waiting for you with everything from art and collectibles to toys and apparel so that you can get a super souvenir from your trip. If you’re hungry then you are also in luck as there is an array of eateries to choose from and the entertainment comes in the form of the mesmerising Cirque du Soleil and the House of Blues.

Day Two
9am – Lake Eola

Time to take a stroll and stretch the legs. There are plenty of things in Orlando other than the amazing theme parks that attract most of the guests. Keep things slow and steady in this scenic downtown park complete with a great walking path, fountain and birds – you can even enter the water on a swan paddleboat – with a relaxing walk.

12pm – Kennedy Space Centre

It might be a 50-mile drive to Cape Canaveral but it is an interesting trip for children and adults alike. Not so much a park as a museum, there is a wonderful mix of activities of offer. A common favourite is the IMAX 3D movie theatre where you can sit and watch in awe while travelling through the galaxies. The newest exhibit of the Atlantis Experience is a must see and the entire place is well organised and detailed to enthral whether you are a space and science enthusiast or not. Out of this world.

6pm – Premium Outlets

As you head back to Orlando, you can head to one of the two Premium Outlet locations and shop ‘til you drop for bargains on hundreds of famous brands. Shops from Penguin to Hugo Boss to Prada are waiting for you. Perfectly placed for easy access, and with plenty of parking, give it a couple of hours to see what you can pick up for yourself.

9pm –Victoria & Albert’s

Although it might be pricier than other restaurants in Orlando, it is worth every cent to experience dinner at Victoria & Albert’s. A stunning tasting menu is served to enjoy in an atmospheric restaurant for a true once in a lifetime occasion. Excellent service and delicious food combined with a relaxed ambience, this will be a meal that you never forget. Found in Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa, it is the perfect way to end your second day in Orlando. Other options worth looking at are the fun-filled La Cava Del Tequila and the reasonably priced FishBones restaurant.
