Travelbag win at National Apprentice Awards

intro1

Travelbag apprentice, Eleanor Stringer, has been highly commended at the National Apprenticeship Awards 2014 . Born and bred in Wilmslow, north Cheshire and wanted to work in her local community but was keen to find a career she loved as she believes that “happiness is the key to success and if you love what you are doing, you will thrive.” She is based at our retail store in Knutsford.

Eleanor made it through to the Regional Finals, North West Region (Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Staffordshire) for Intermediate Apprentice of the Year, securing the Commended Award, narrowly missing out to fellow apprentice, Lois McClure who won the category. According to the judges, the submissions were of a remarkably exceptional quality, making this year’s competition the toughest yet. The finalists were picked from 14,000 applications.

Ruth Downes, shop manager of Travelbag Knutsford said: “Eleanor has been a fantastic apprentice; she is motivated and keen to learn. Eleanor has been very adaptable and every month her knowledge has improved along with her confidence.  Her work is excellent, specifically her customer service, which is an integral part of the role.  I look forward to her having a successful and long career at Travelbag.”

Adam Duthie, Head of Operations and Sales at Travelbag commented: “I am extremely proud of Eleanor’s achievements and she is well deserving of this award. As an apprentice at Travelbag, she has been exceptional in every way adapting to the target driven sales environment with ease and excelling at every goal set. As an apprentice pioneer for Travelbag, we could not be happier with Eleanor, and indeed, her apprentice peer group for our first apprenticeship programme.  The results that she and her colleagues have achieved made the continuation of the scheme an easy decision with the new intake already in training.”

Travelbag’s Apprentice Programme
Travelbag’s first apprentice programme was launched in 2013 and was intended to provide an opportunity to train and develop young people with a passion for travel and a desire to succeed who would in turn become sellers, pricing specialists and marketers of the future. Our aim was to create a 12 month programme that would provide a solid foundation for our Apprentices to learn their trade both in the classroom and on the shop floor, with a view to providing them a platform to build a future with Travelbag.

Travelbag sees a notable contribution from the apprentices to the business' bottom-line whilst at the same time apprentices provide Travelbag with a sustainable way of growing our highly-skilled workforce. Their fresh approach brings a new dynamic to the business with our staff being motivated by the knowledge that we are giving young talented people the opportunity to develop in this highly competitive industry. The apprenticeship scheme has been an integral part in our long-term staff retention plan, making sure we attract the highest quality recruits.

Anna Ricketts, Human Resources Manager for Stella Travel Services incorporating Travelbag said: “The Apprenticeship programme has been a tremendous success so far. Over the course of their 12 month programme we have seen a fantastic display of enthusiasm, commitment and dedication from all our apprentices to learn and understand the objectives of our business and how they themselves can play a part in achieving business results. All of us involved in the apprenticeship programme are very proud, not just of Eleanor’s achievements, but by the achievements of all of her peer group. All our successful apprentices are currently on a 10 day reward trip to Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Thailand in recognition of their apprenticeship completion.

We are delighted to be entering the next phase of this journey with our 6 new apprentices currently in training. Without the success of last year’s apprentice group we may not have had the opportunity to increase the number of apprentices we have been able to take on across Travelbag and the rest of the Stella Travel Services UK group.”
