Top 5 Things to do in Cancun

by Ollie Barstow on 11 January 2012, 09:01AM Top 5 Things to do in Cancun

Mayan Archaeology

Relics of the ancient Mayan civilization that occupied this area during the early centuries can be found in and around Cancun. In addition to archaeological sites at El Rey and El Meco, the great walled city of Tulum is the biggest draw for tourists interested in Mexico’s history. Situated on cliffs overlooking the Caribbean Sea, Tulum is a remarkably well-preserved Mayan site, with the prominent Pyramid El Castillo (The Castle) serving as its centrepiece.

Xcarat Ecological Park

Labelled as an ‘eco-archaeological park’, Xcaret is a fun and unique attraction that celebrates Mexico’s rich biodiversity. The ideal place to learn about Mexico’s history, particularly the Mayan artefacts that can be found here, and experience this area’s natural marvels, such as cenotes and underground rivers, in one place, Xcaret is as fascinating as it is enjoyable. More than that though, Xcaret is committed to ecology, promoting marine turtle conservation, reusing its water for irrigation and producing compost, ensuring it practices what it preaches.

Swim with Dolphins

A perennial favourite on any person’s ‘life to-do list’, swimming with dolphins is a readily available in Cancun at several sites, including Xcarat and Isla Mujeres. Swimming with Dolphins is an unforgettable experience and available to holidaymakers of all ages.

Cancun is home to a number of excellent quality golf courses, some even designed by golfing greats Greg Norman and Jack Nicklaus. Amongst the finest courses is the El Camaleon at Fairmont Mayakoba Hotel, which has been tasked with hosting PGA Tour events, while the Pok Ta Pok Golf Club, the Moon Palace Golf Club and the Hilton Golf Club are also well regarded.

MUSA Underwater Museum

Cancun’s diving sites are well-known, but even non-enthusiasts should take the chance to explore the extraordinary MUSA (Museo Subacuatico de Arte). Founded by Jaime Gonzalez, MUSA is otherwise known as an Underwater Museum, where hundreds of life-size sculptures by Jason deCaires Taylor have been installed. The most ambitious of 4 installations is ‘The Silent Evolution’, a collection of over 400 life-size ‘people’ stood together to form a mass gathering. MUSA is more than just art, however, as the sculptures have been formed using special materials that interact with the coral reef and will encourage marine life to colonise and inhabit.
