5 Reasons to Visit Mauritius

by Travelbag on 16 November 2016, 11:11AM

Mauritius is perhaps the closest you will find yourself to heaven. The Surrey sized island boasts year-round sunshine and warm weather, while still blending in enough culture for a full authentic holiday experience. It’s worth noting that the island is a former pirate paradise, giving you the perfect excuse for rum before 12.00, other than being on holiday, of course.

Romance & Luxury

Mauritius

With long stretching beaches, verdant forestry and imposing volcanic peaks the island of Mauritius was made for romance and only amplified by the luxurious resorts on offer. From private helicopter transfers, seafront infinity pools and top-notch spas it’s no wonder the destination is frequently top of romantic getaways.

Activities

The island is home to a plethora of activities to keep you entertained long into the night. Firstly, there’s golf. Fun fact, Mauritius is touted as being only the third country in the world to play golf, making The Mauritius Gymkhana Golf club the oldest golf club in the Southern Hemisphere and fourth oldest in the world. With an average of 9 bright hours of daylight, strolling a golf course sounds the perfect way to spend an evening. Next, there’s hiking. The island is home to several peaks just waiting to be traversed, three of which are over 800m and at 828m Piton de la Petite Riviere Noire ranks as the tallest. Offering stunning 360º panoramas round the island and far out to sea, reaching the top of this ridge is truly rewarding. The area is in fact so beautiful Mark Twain noted in his personal travelogue, "You gather the idea that Mauritius was made first and then heaven and that heaven was copied after Mauritius".

Scuba Diving and snorkelling are a standalone reason to visit Mauritius, with over 400 breeds of fish, over 200 coral species, and 22 wreck sites it’s an evergreen diving location but summer months are best (November to April). Despite being spoilt for choice, a favourite dive location is the Colorado and Roche Zozo located off Blue Bay on the southern coast. Maybe swimming isn’t your thing though and if this is the case there’s always a semi-submarine trip. A semi-submarine is much like a glass-bottomed boat, only submerged deeper utilising this with large glass walls.

Beaches

Mauritius beaches

With 160km of beach circumnavigating the island you’ll be hard pressed to not find a spot perfect for you. But, to make it easier, here’s a quick synopsis of what to expect in each area of the island. In the north, you should expect to find white sand bordering the calm azure waters. The east coast line is rockier and as result, you’re more likely to find yourself a secluded, small beach. The east also brings with it the strongest of winds, resulting in the coolest part of the island, you may find yourself needing a wrap in the east during August. We recommend younger people head south, catch the waves and the wilder scene. As the old saying goes, ‘West is Best’, head out to the western flank of the island and find long, flat golden beaches perfect for possibly the best sunset you’ll ever witness.

Wildlife

While the majority of the stunning wildlife is seen under water, above is a bird spotter paradise with over 100 different species calling the treetop canvas home.  Also calling the island home is the Seychelles giant tortoise, these slow-moving giants are believed to be the most long-lived animals on the planet, though it’s hard to tell as they tend to outlive all their human observers. If plants are more your thing, Mauritius is home to more than 700 flowering plants, including the incredible pandanus.

Food

The island is a pescetarian’s dream, making great use of the surrounding natural resource of fish the cuisine is heavily based around seafood. On top of this, the country has faced strong migrations from India and China, the cuisine has taken further influence from perfect for your curry and noodle dishes.  Thanks to its former pirate links, rum is available all round the island and it tastes great! The island is home to three rum breweries and they all produce the spectacular drink.  While out there we highly recommend trying the famed street food of dholl puri. This dish can be found almost anywhere; the bread-based dish is usually accompanied by a chicken curry and perfect for eating on the go. Or while at a sitdown meal, try the fish vindaye – a fish vindaloo.
