Beach in Mauritius

It’s fair to say that 2020 hasn’t quite turned out the way we expected. Travel plans have changed, weddings have been postponed, and daily life has completely transformed. But, as time temporarily stands still, it’s important to look ahead. The world will re-open and, when it does, there are plenty of exciting places for you to explore.

If you want something to look forward to, start planning your 2021 holiday. Imagine how amazing it will feel to sink your toes into powdery sands, or to watch the sunset in a far-away place. Is there somewhere you’ve always been desperate to go? Or perhaps there’s a special place you want to return to, once normality resumes? Whether you’re dreaming of a chilled-out beach break or an action-packed adventure, we’ve got something for you. Take a look at the best holiday destinations for 2021.

USA

After being cooped up inside, what better way to celebrate your freedom than a road trip? And the vast USA is definitely the best place to do it. Drive up California’s coast, ticking off Los Angeles and San Francisco, then head inland to Yosemite National Park, and on to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. Or explore the Deep South, and take in the music and history of Nashville, Memphis and Atlanta. Prefer to get back to nature? Head off on a road trip through Oregon and discover lakes, mountains and vineyards.

Yosemite National Park

The Maldives

After the stress of this year, you might simply want a laidback beach holiday in 2021. If that’s the case, the Maldives should be at the top of your list. Famous for its pure-white sands, impossibly blue waters and world-class snorkelling, this cluster of 1,200 islands is the ultimate place to relax. Spend your days swimming with tropical fish and sunbathing on the beach, then retreat to your overwater villa and chill out on your sea-view terrace. Tempted? Find out when’s the best time to go to the Maldives.

Thailand

A trip to ‘the Land of Smiles’ is the perfect way to cheer yourself up. A well-oiled holiday machine, Thailand boasts beautiful beaches, incredible food and the friendliest people you’ll ever meet. First-time visitors to Thailand should spend a few days in bustling Bangkok – where you can visit the Grand Palace and feast on street food – before heading south to Koh Samui or Krabi for some well-earned beach time. Alternatively, if you prefer jungles to beaches, combine Bangkok and Chiang Mai into one amazing holiday. This city in Northern Thailand is home to hill tribes, ornate temples and ethical elephant sanctuaries.

Koh Phangan beach

South Africa

If you’re looking for a wildlife adventure, make tracks for South Africa. You can go on safari in search of the ‘Big Five’ – lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo – as well as cheetah, giraffe, wildebeest and zebra. But there’s a lot more to South Africa holidays than game drives. Explore Cape Town’s beaches, mountains and bustling waterfront. Sip crisp wines in Stellenbosch and Oudtshoorn, and drive along the scenic Garden Route. The best part? South Africa remains one of the best-value long-holiday destinations in the world, so your trip doesn’t have to break the bank.

Australia

With bushfires and floods, Australia has had a tough time lately. But this incredible country is rapidly recovering, and you’ll find the land is miraculously revived by the time your 2021 holiday comes around. And your options really are endless. You could drive up the east coast, stopping off at Sydney, Brisbane and Fraser Island, before reaching Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef. Alternatively, visit Western Australia to explore sun-soaked Perth and swim with whale sharks at Ningaloo Reef. Or perhaps you’d prefer to head into the Red Centre, visit sacred Uluru and dine under the stars in the desert? Whether you’re looking for culture, wildlife or lively cities, a holiday to Australia ticks all the boxes.

Sydney Harbour

Dubai

You don’t have to travel to the other side of the world to have an adventure. If you’re looking for a week away in the sun, consider going to Dubai. This futuristic city is home to some eye-popping landmarks, including the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, and the biggest shopping mall on the planet. You can sightsee, browse scented souks, unwind on the beach, and head into the dunes on a desert safari. And the weather is fantastic throughout the year, so you can book your 2021 trip for whenever suits you – you can even pop over to Dubai for a long weekend, if you wish.

If you’re already been to Dubai, consider visiting one of the other Emirates. The capital, Abu Dhabi, combines grand architecture and cultural sites with luxury hotels. If you want a beach break, take a look at Ras al Khaimah to the north, or easterly Fujairah, which is brushed by the Gulf of Oman. Meanwhile, petite Ajman has great surfing, and is just a 30-minute drive from Dubai.

Japan

Vibrant and fascinating, a holiday to Japan is great option for those seeking a combination of culture and nature. And, since the 2020 Summer Olympics have been postponed, 2021 is a fantastic year to visit – the country will be buzzing with anticipation. Be amazed by the sheer scale of Tokyo, visit the traditional temples of Kyoto, and eat your way around Osaka. If you want to see Japan’s iconic cherry blossoms, though, make sure you plan your trip between March and May.

Kyoto Golden Pavilion

The Caribbean

If the Caribbean has been on your bucket list for a while, why not tick it off next year? You’ve got plenty of choices, so it’s worth doing some research to decide which Caribbean island is best for you. Couples will love romantic St Lucia, while diverse Barbados has all kinds of activities and attractions for families. Every island boasts some stunning beaches, but Antigua is our pick of the bunch – it has the best-value holidays in the Caribbean, too.

Canada

Canada offers a whole host of once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, so it’s a great choice if you’re looking to go all-out on your 2021 holiday. Head towards Vancouver and you’ll be able to go whale-watching, see wild bears in British Columbia, and travel through the incredible Rockies. You can either weave past lakes and snowy peaks onboard the Rocky Mountaineer, or hire a car and drive through beautiful spots like Banff National Park. Alternatively, discover Canada’s east coast. Explore the sleepy villages of Nova Scotia, or head to vibrant Toronto and travel south to see thundering Niagara Falls.

Moraine Lake, Banff National Park

Mauritius

If you want to chill out, but find you get itchy feet after a few days by the pool, a holiday to Mauritius is perfect. This tropical island successfully blends beaches, culture and adventure all into one. Go zip-lining through the forest, gawp at the phenomenal Seven Coloured Earths, and hike through Black River Gorges National Park. You can browse the markets of Port Louis and fill up on Creole cuisine. Play golf, go dolphin-watching, and snorkel in the Indian Ocean. Then, once you’ve had your fill of activities, you can retreat to the postcard-worthy beaches and relax.
