Cultural attractions, beautiful beaches, delicious cuisine and welcoming people are just some of the reasons we love getting out there and exploring the world. But wildlife also plays a big part. So in this week's Escape Edition, we are showcasing some of our favourite animal encounters from around the world - from safaris in Africa to Queensland's best-kept secret and everything in between. We've got you covered!

Want to explore beyond South Africa? No problem. Our customers love exploring as much of the world as possible. Add a few extra days to your trip with some sightseeing and shopping in the Middle East. Or, after a week in South Africa, retreat to the idyllic island of Mozambique for some well-earned rest and relaxation. Alternatively, if you’d like to see more of Africa, combine a wildlife safari in the South African bush with the dramatic Victoria Falls, Namibia’s deserts, or Botswana’s deltas. The possibilities are endless.

SWING INTO NATURE

Walk along the jungle-clad peaks of Crocker Range National Park, where you can spot gibbons, macaques, civet cats, and various birdlife. Or explore the ancient rainforest in Taman Negara Gunung Kinabalu. Spanning 750 square kilometres, Taman Negara Kinabalu was Malaysia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site and is crammed with more than 4,500 types of flora and fauna, including over 320 bird species.

But the orangutan is the real star of the show. No holiday to Borneo would be complete without seeing this flame-haired primate. You’ll unlikely see one in the wild, so set aside a day to visit Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Home to about 80 orangutans, the centre teaches its residents to look after themselves before releasing them back into the wild. You’ll see baby and adult orangutans swinging through the immense forest reserve and filling up on bananas at feeding time.
If the underwater world is what you want to explore, then head to Gaya Island. Set within a protected national park, you can go diving or stay on dry land and see turtles hatching on the beaches during the hatching season.

QUEENSLAND'S MARINE MECCA

When you think of marine life and Australia, most people think of the Great Barrier Reef, but the Fraser Coast in south Queensland gives you more than just coral reefs. The waters between Hervey Bay and World Heritage-listed K’gari (formerly known as Fraser Island) are home to dolphins, stingrays, turtles, and sharks and are one of the best places in Australia to see humpback whales
From June to November, these gentle giants rest, play and give birth in the protected waters off Hervey Bay. Join a whale-watching cruise to watch them playfully salute with their flippers and nurture their young calves at the world's first Whale Heritage Site.

Another one of Australia's marine meccas is Lady Elliott Island. Located at the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef, this small island is home to extraordinary marine life and glittering white beaches made of crushed coral. Discover over 1,200 species of marine life, including nesting turtles, abundant reef life, migrating whales, resident and visiting bird populations, and not to mention a large population of giant manta rays, which are best spotted in October and November.
The Fraser Coast's Marine Mecca gives you an unforgettable, up-close encounter with many marine wonders.
