A LITTLE BIT OF PARADISE

HOP OVER TO ROTTNEST ISLAND

FROZEN BUBBLE MAGIC

A LITTLE BIT OF PARADISE

The Seychelles are one of the most conservation-conscious archipelagos on Earth, with only 16 of its 115 islands inhabited. The isles are home to rare and remarkable species, ranging from the enormous Aldabra tortoise to the world’s tiniest frog.
Catch a glimpse of Eden in the mysterious Vallée de Mai – the world’s biggest Coco de Mer plantation, right at the heart of Praslin National Park, one of only two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Seychelles. The island of Praslin has no towns at all – only charming local villages – and even the luxury resorts scattered around the coast are eco-aware and designed in harmony with the landscape. And, since the island is relatively flat, you can do as the locals do and cycle around to discover hidden gems.

La Digue boasts 18 spectacular beaches, including one of the most photographed in the world, Anse Source d’Argent. It is also a place to uncover the Seychelles’ past, with French colonial plantation houses, historic estates, and intriguing customs. Colourful oxen-drawn carts are one of the preferred modes of transport on La Digue, second only to bikes or feet.

The lesser-known isles in the Seychelles are also worth a visit. Untamed Aride is known as the ‘Seabird Citadel’ of the Indian Ocean and has the largest lizard population on Earth. In Ile Cocos, meanwhile, you can dive and snorkel in one of the Seychelles’ protected marine parks. Or to see giant Aldabra tortoises, speedy geckoes, and flocks of unusual birds, don’t miss a day out on conservation-rich Cousin.

FROZEN BUBBLE MAGIC

From Banff, head up the famous Icefield Parkway to the Saskatchewan Crossing and turn onto Highway 11. Surrounded by the towering cliff faces of the Rocky Mountains sits Abraham Lake, home to a bubble phenomenon.
The lake is stunning year-round, but it is a truly special place to visit in the winter when the turquoise water freezes and reveals thousands of white bubbles frozen below the surface.
These frozen bubbles are caused when the plants at the bottom of the lake rot and release methane gas, creating bubbles in the water. As the temperature drops, these methane bubbles become trapped in ice suspended just below the lake’s surface. The best time to see the Abraham Lake Bubbles is mid-January to early February, when the lake looks like a giant lava lamp, with icy blobs frozen in time.

One of the best ways to view this unique phenomenon is from the air. Take to the skies on a helicopter tour for a bird’s eye view of the Rockies in all their wintery splendour. From high above, you’ll witness this otherworldly scene of frozen bubbles extending down into the deep blue ice before stopping and heading out on foot to explore it up close.
