Where to go on your US adventure

Get more inspiration

When Americans say they’re travelling to ‘Europe’, we rightly ask ‘Which part?’. It’s the same when UK travellers head to the US.

Are you looking for sun, snow, culture, history? Do you imagine seafood by the ocean, wine among the olive groves, or madcap days driven by the energy of the city? Each of the 50 US states is distinctive in landscape, attitude, and what attractions it has for visitors. With so much variety, choosing where to go on your US adventure can be tough. Though we could never cover it all in one article, here are some of the most exciting and popular USA holidays.

New York & the Northeast

There’s nowhere in the world quite like New York. While the movies might be made in Hollywood, the Big Apple often provides the backdrop. Stepping onto its streets is like slipping behind the screen into a world as familiar as it is exciting. For those who like to dive right in, New York holidays are one of the best ways to start a US adventure. Climb iconic skyscrapers, wander the magical oasis of Central Park, cross bridges between boroughs, and find your favourite coffee shop, bar, or kerbside restaurant in a neighbourhood which suits your style. When night falls, head to Broadway and catch a show. While in ‘the city that never sleeps’, you have easy access by rail or road to the northeast’s other metropolises such as Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. When the rain comes, browse world-famous museums and galleries. When it’s dry, stroll through leafy parks and living history. Spend days working up appetites and nights sampling local delicacies in the USA’s most cosmopolitan quarter.

Hollywood, Vegas, and the Canyon

The distance between New York and Los Angeles is measured in far more than miles. They may be the two largest cities in the US, but that’s where the similarities end. From the Hollywood sign to Disneyland in Anaheim, LA is about making magic. Flit between some of the world’s best-known beaches and the designer boutiques of Rodeo Drive. Take magical tours through household-name studios, skip along the Walk of Fame, and keep your eyes peeled for celebs at bustling markets and al fresco cafés. Pick up a convertible and drive just a few hours to find a glittering playground in the desert. Las Vegas holidays are filled with extravagance. Big food, big shows, big parties, cool pools, and - of course - enormous casinos. A weekend in Sin City is the perfect complement to a short break in La La Land and a bucket list experience that pushes every sense to its limits. Grab a moment of serenity without losing the grandeur when you hop into a helicopter and take a Grand Canyon tour during your stay.

California Coast

The 600-mile journey from San Diego to Sacramento is a pathway for one of the best USA tours. A trip along the US Pacific Coast opens up Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Pismo Beach, Big Sur, Santa Cruz, and San Francisco as you enjoy the sun-kissed shores of California. Whether you choose an escorted tour, rail journey, or self-drive road trip, this stunning region of the US offers an opportunity to kick back and enjoy the views as you visit some of the most welcoming oceanside destinations in the country. From San Francisco, you’ll also have easy access to the wine region of Napa Valley and a strip of inspiring national parks, including the giant redwood groves of Yosemite and Sequoia.

Orlando to the Keys

Less than 10 hours non-stop from London or Manchester, Florida is the most famous family destination in the US. Disney World, Universal Studios, Busch Gardens, and Seaworld bring thrillseekers from around the world to Orlando and its surrounding districts. Executive holiday homes and villas with pools provide the perfect accommodation for groups, while Disney’s own hotels and lodges offer a little extra magic for those who want to fully immerse themselves in Walt’s world. Outside the parks, golf courses and family restaurants make relaxing easy while imaginations can be ignited at the Kennedy Space Center and in the unique wetlands of the Everglades. Travel south through Miami to combine your park trip with a laidback escape and a stunning beach retreat along the Florida Keys.

National Parks

New York, San Francisco, Chicago, New Orleans, and Seattle - city breaks in the US are as diverse as they are enticing. When you want to escape it all, America delivers on an even grander scale. From coast to coast and border to border, visitors to the US will find some of the best national park holidays in the world. Yosemite, Yellowstone, the Rocky Mountains, the Great Smoky Mountains, and the Canyonlands of Utah or Grand Teton in Wyoming are just a few of the incredible wilderness locations to explore. US national parks can be visited as a side trip from a city or beach, as part of an extensive campervan road trip, or on a dedicated escorted tour. However you do it, the sense of space, freedom, and the majesty of nature will leave you captivated and eager for more.

Classic Road Trips

With so much to cover, a road trip in the US is one of the best ways to make the most of your holiday. We’ve all heard of Route 66, and this most famous road will take you from Chicago to Los Angeles in just two weeks. Alternatively, you could uncover the musical heritage of the South on an American Rhythms drive through Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. For a bit of elegance and a lot of history, New England has itineraries filled with charm and grace. Or, you could go the whole hog and cross the continent on a three-week Great American Road Trip. Whatever your wish list of destinations, there’s a route for you to follow. Don’t fancy doing the driving yourself? Check out our USA tour packages, which let you sit back and enjoy the ride.

Endless Options

While these are some of the most popular options for a US adventure, we’ve barely scratched the surface. Away from the US mainland, Alaska and Hawaii offer dramatic new experiences at both ends of the climate scale, while combinations of mainland locations with Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean can create unforgettable multi-centre holidays of every kind.
