How about some first-hand advice and information from someone who’s already visited Brisbane, Cairns and K’gari? Our Travel Specialist, Priscilla, recently returned from her multi-centre holiday to Queensland, and we’re excited to hear the details…
If you’re wondering what to pack, firstly, I’d recommend weather-appropriate clothing - while Queensland is often blessed with incredible weather, don’t always assume the sun will shine! Key items for your travel bag are t-shirts, sundresses, shorts, swimwear, and rain gear, including a waterproof jacket to stay dry from sudden downpours. Preparation is essential to a comfortable trip.
Queensland offers world-class outdoor adventures, legendary natural beauty, and unfathomable underwater worlds. And with this comes plenty of wildlife, so don’t forget some insect repellent, suitable walking shoes, and the basics, like your passport and appropriate visa.
I flew to Queensland with Singapore Airlines. With spacious seats, I was comfortable and relaxed the entire journey, and their diverse inflight entertainment options were a bonus. This flight takes around 23-24 hours, but time does fly when you’re so comfortable! The exciting long-haul flight is just the start of your fantastic adventure – my advice is to use the travel time to get acquainted with your destination and itinerary.
Queensland has many astounding highlights, and you should try to experience as many as possible. Its capital, Brisbane, is home to museums, landmarks, beaches, restaurants, and more. Queensland’s sensational Sunshine Coast is approximately 100 kilometres from this bustling city.
You’ll find the coastal town of Noosa Heads at the tip of the Sunshine Coast. An experience that stood out for me here was landing on Noosa Beach – a tropical paradise of cream sands and turquoise waters.
Another highlight whilst touring Noosa was the 4WD drive over 50 kilometres of sand! It was thrilling, to say the least. Queensland boasts plenty of spots for an epic off-road drive. There’s no better way to experience this destination’s unforgettable natural beauty. Take the road less travelled and soak in the astonishing sights, from sun-drenched beaches to wildlife-filled national parks. You’ll experience the best of Queensland and enjoy an exciting ride all in one!
Queensland’s Sunshine Coast offers the best of both worlds - a beautiful beach on one side and a vast hinterland of the majestic Glass Mountains further in. Imagine seeing this incredible collection of natural, jagged, volcanic peaks from a breathtaking plane ride above! This was my trip highlight, and I would 100% recommend it. Another astonishing sight is the Noosa Everglades, a series of walkways, tropical wetlands, and wilderness in the upper reaches of the Noosa River. Over 40% of Australia’s bird species can be found here.
This iconic coast also boasts the epic Australia Zoo. Steve Irwin’s family owns this 700-acre zoo, and it is home to a diverse array of animals. This is the perfect place for seeing Australia’s wonderful wildlife all in one place, and this attraction is particularly great for families holidaying Down Under.
After fun on the Sunshine Coast, it’s time to cool down. My favourite thing to do was snorkelling in the world’s largest coral reef system, The Great Barrier Reef. Approximately a two-and-a-half hour flight from the Sunshine Coast, Cairns is a beautiful city in Queensland’s tropical north and the perfect place to access these famous waters. The list of sea creatures is seemingly endless, with iridescent fish, whales, turtles, spinner dolphins, sharks, and more, all living amongst the reef’s vibrantly coloured corals.
A flight and ferry journey away from Cairns is K’gari, a truly breathtaking experience. If you’re considering visiting this idyllic island, your trip wouldn’t be complete without visiting Lake McKenzie (also known as Boorangoora). The clear blue waters offer an ideal spot for relaxation. Located in Great Sandy National Park, its appearance is mesmerising. This perched lake contains only rainwater, with a dense wonder of a rainforest nearby. If you fancy an escape to K’gari, this peaceful island offers a wide range of eco experiences.
In Cairns, one of the top attractions is the Great Barrier Reef. My advice is to ensure you choose a reputable tour operator for snorkelling, diving, or reef exploration. Also, booking your reef tour in advance is best, considering factors like group size and the specific activities offered.
Remember to check the weather and plan activities accordingly. It’s best to make reservations for tours or activities in advance to avoid disappointment, especially during the high tourist season. A great way to experience all Queensland offers is with Aqua Duck Tours. Splash down and enjoy picturesque river cruises along Queensland’s Gold or Sunshine Coast; magnificent scenery and breathtaking views await.
Despite my unbelievable Queensland experience, I know there’s much more to see and do. I’d love to return and spend some time on the Whitsunday Islands. I’d relax on the pristine beaches, explore the treasure-filled resort towns and swim amongst the rainbow-hued reefs teeming with sea life.
Destination Queensland, but make it quick?
If I only had 24 hours in Queensland, I would enjoy a delicious breakfast on Cairns’ esplanade, followed by a day trip to the Great Barrier Reef. Then, I would browse the night markets and enjoy a mouth-watering seafood dinner (Queensland’s fresh seafood dishes were delicious!). Cairns has it all and is a true bucket-list destination.
There are many options for luxury escapes in Queensland, but if you pick the right hotel location, Cairns and Brisbane can be extremely affordable.
