Oregon is one of the most diverse U.S. states – with diverse climates, geography and agriculture. From the rugged Pacific coast to the wide Willamette Valley, and the snow-capped Cascade Mountains to the high deserts of eastern Oregon. Almost anything can grow here, except tropical fruits! Farms and ranches dot the land, providing all manner of fruit trees, berries, vegetables, and grains – as well as raising ranch and dairy animals. The ocean and rivers contribute crab, oysters, shrimp, salmon and other seafood and fish. There is so much to explore for foodies here in the Portland Region.
The whole Portland Region is within the Willamette Valley AVA (American Viticultural Area). It’s one of only two US viticultural areas (along with Napa Valley) that have received Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) Status by the European Union. And, lest we forget beer, Oregon brewers pioneered the U.S. craft brew movement, helped in large part by the delicious hops grown here.
Chefs, cooks and diners as well as drinkers in the Portland Region celebrate this abundance every day. You can too on this fun and tasty itinerary!
On arrival in Portland head down to the Tualatin Valley on Portland’s west side, as this will be your home-away-from-home for the beginning of this trip. Try and arrange your itinerary so you are here over the weekend as this will mean you can visit some of the many Farmers Markets in the Portland Region. Beaverton and Hillsboro both have markets on a Saturday (Beaverton market - April-November, 8:30am-1:30pm; and the Hillsboro market - May-October, 9am-1pm), and Tigard has a Farmers Market on Sundays (May-October, 9.30-1.30pm).

Today is all about the wine. Winemaking began in the Portland Region in the 1970’s. One of the families who pioneered the effort was Dick and Nancy Ponzi, and their two daughters. The vineyard is now owned by French wine family Bollinger, with Luisa Ponzi (Dick and Nancy’s daughter) still in charge of winemaking. The Ponzi Vineyards is a great place to sample award-winning wine and gain an understanding of viticulture in the Willamette Valley.
However, with over 40 wineries and tasting rooms, there’s no shortage of tasting and touring opportunities. Note that reservations may be necessary, and that tasting fees are often revoked with wine purchases. For a suggested routing that also features a few restaurants, plus beer and saké sampling, check out this Tualatin Valley Wine and Beer Tour Route. Or check out the Tualatin Valley's winery webpage for great recommendations. A few local favorites are Eagles Nest Reserve & Winery, Siderius Winery, Alloro Vineyard, Ruby Vineyard, Apolloni Vineyards and David Hill Winery.

After sampling wine yesterday why not head to Saké One near Forest Grove, a charming small college town with a real sense of Americana and the only place you’ll find locally-made saké. It’s also home to McMenamin’s Grand Lodge – a former Masonic Lodge that’s now a quirky complex of restaurants, bars, theatre, live music venue and spa, so a great place to spend the afternoon.
The area is also awash with breweries – so much so that the Tualatin Valley Ale Trail was created. With 18 breweries to visit on the downloadable “passport”, there are also deals and prizes to collect at participating pubs, so see how many locations you can tick off.

Back to the foodie scene today. Head northwest of Forest Grove to the edge of the forested Coastal Mountains, to Fraga Farmstead Creamery, Oregon’s only organic certified goat dairy. Fraga creates delicious cheeses, caramels and gelato which are available for purchase at their self-serve Farm Stand, open Tuesday-Sunday. If they’re not too busy with chores, they’ll introduce you to some of the goats too!
This region offers 30+ farms and markets where you can either pick your own fresh berries and fruit, or buy them. Local favorites include Red Berry Barn, Smith Berry Barn, Hoffman Farms Store, and Helvetia Farm Market. You can also check out the variety of food cart pods in the region.
Beaverton features an assortment of popular restaurants and brewpubs (Breakside, ExNovo, Loyal Legion and Binary), and BG’s Food Cartel - a food cart pod which is just along the MAX light rail line. You’ll also find an abundance of international cuisines including Japanese restaurant, Afuri, and Japanese bakery, Oyatsupan, as well as Mexican, Thai, Italian, French, Vietnamese and Indian restaurants and food carts in Beaverton and throughout the Tualatin Valley.
Alternatively, if you’d like to take a day to visit the Oregon Coast, check out the North Coast Food Trail.

Leave the Tualatin Valley and head to Mt. Hood Territory on the eastern side of the fertile Willamette Valley, your home for the next few days. Farmers Markets are held here from May through to October. In Oregon City on Saturdays, 9am-2pm; in nearby Milwaukie, on Sundays, 9:30am–2pm. And as you plan your activities for the next few days, check the schedule at The Kitchen at Middleground Farms to see what’s on – it is a great place to take a fun cooking class!

Over the next few days explore the food scene in the Mt. Hood Territory. Formerly the capital of the Oregon Territory, Oregon City features an old-fashioned Main Street, with small shops and good restaurants. Gabe Rucker is a James Beard award-winning chef who runs three restaurants in the Portland Region, including Canard Restaurant (Gabe’s take on a French bistro).
Mt. Hood Territory is also rich with breweries, cider houses and distilleries. The Mt. Hood Territory Tap Trail makes them easy to explore. One of the most unique Tap Trail participants is TMK Creamery in Canby, who produces vodka (“cowcohol”) from whey leftover from their cheddar cheese-making process! (You can also buy cheese and ice cream there - Open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.)
Bob’s Red Mill, the primary supplier of whole grain and healthy food products in the US, has its headquarters and their only retail store, bakery and restaurant, near Milwaukie. Locals go there for breakfast as well as to buy their wholesome fare – why not go too!
For purely American fare of days gone by, check out Mike’s Drive-Ins in Milwaukie and Oregon City. Oregon is blessed with a significant Hispanic population in the region, so there is a great selection of Mexican restaurants and food carts. Casa de Tamale in Milwaukie is the go-to place for locally made tamales. Or for a more refined dining experience in the village of West Linn, consider a visit to Allium Bistro, led by chef Pascal Chureau. You’ll find American and European cuisines made with fresh, seasonal ingredients straight from local farmers and purveyors.

Head back to Portland today to experience the delights that await in the city. In the 1990’s, Portland experienced a food revival. Chef Greg Higgins moved from a large US East Coast city and discovered the abundance of fresh, local fare, available easily in Portland, and opened the first “farm to table” restaurant in the Region. Since then, the Portland Region has blossomed into a Foodie Haven. Check into your hotel and head out to explore your new surroundings. Maybe try a pizza place for dinner as Portland’s pizza scene continues to be acclaimed as some of the best in the U.S. Ken’s Artisan Pizza and A Pizza Scholls frequently top the list, but pretty much you can’t go wrong ordering pizza in Portland.
