Overview

What better way to see the world than to give your trip a purpose and take in the fantastic new wonders? With seven to experience, you’ll be entering seven different countries. A once in a lifetime trip, you’ll be part of the few that can say they have ‘travelled around the world’!

Visiting these extraordinary sites will provide insight into the country’s culture and how and why these structures exist. Towering above Rio is Christ the Redeemer with outstretched arms and a symbolic stance, while in China, the Great Wall of China reaches over 20,000 kilometres in length. Italy’s top tourist attraction, the Colosseum, is in the heart of Rome and is the perfect introduction to the rest of the city. Like many main attractions, they can get busy, and the Taj Mahal in India, Chichen Itza in Mexico and Petra in Jordan are no exception – our top tip is to get up early to avoid the crowds. Making memories is important, so we encourage you to share and take as many pictures as possible – when you get to Peru and see Machu Picchu, you won’t be able to stop yourself!

Your around-the-world trip taking in the wonders can be tailored to you and how much time you have, and our Travel Specialists are here to help guide you along the way.

Rome, Italy

The Colosseum

Over 2000 years old, the Colosseum is Italy’s top tourist attraction, and it doesn’t disappoint. Hearing stories of gladiators and lions brings it all to life in this iconic amphitheatre. Your ticket will also include Palatine Hill, where the houses of aristocrats and the emperor were located. A little tip from us to avoid the bigger crowds is to go very early (8.30am is when it opens) or later in the afternoon as these are the quieter periods. There is also much more to Rome, so take a few days to explore the streets, shops and one-of-a-kind restaurants. When in Rome…

Jordan

Petra

We recommend staying in Wadi Musa, which is the closest town when visiting Petra. Wadi Musa is full of restaurants and shops, and it means you are in the heart of the main attraction. Or you could stay in Ammam, the Jordanian capital, a three-hour ride away. Petra is one of the most famous archaeological sites, which is half-built, half-carved into the rock and is situated between the Red Sea and the Dead Sea, surrounded by mountains. You can experience it all in one day, but we recommend taking your time and at least spending a night over.

Agra, India

Taj Mahal

When someone says Taj Mahal, you can immediately picture the impressive white marble building you have seen in films and pictures, but why not see it up close? It was built between 1631 and 1648 in memory of the emperor Shah Jahan’s favourite wife. We have many tips and tricks for visiting the Taj Mahal, but one is to go very early before it opens to avoid the heat and enter with fewer people. This way, you can enjoy the day and take those magical photos. You can spend a good two days in Agra exploring and ensuring you take in the sights of the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Baby Taj. Meeting locals is always our favourite pastime, so don’t be afraid to speak to people and learn about the culture.

Beijing, China

Great wall of China

At an impressive 20,000 kilometres and just over 13,000 miles, the wall was built as a defence against North invasions. It took a remarkable 2,500 years to build, starting from the 7th century BCE. It can take as little as an hour from Beijing to get to the wall, but it depends on which part you want to visit, so do your research. Visiting the Great Wall of China is a must, and there are several different experiences and tours to choose from.

Cancun, Mexico

Chichen Itza

Easily accessible from Cancun or Riviera Maya, this wonder is truly unmissable. Once a bustling city for trade, Chichen Itza attracted pilgrims from across the Mayan world, and today it is still bringing in visitors to marvel at the temples and ballcourts. Dating back to the 6th century A.D. your visit will be strewn with stories of the past and incredible buildings. Listed as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and being a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you can understand why this is one of the most visited attractions in Mexico.

Cusco, Peru

Machu Picchu

You often hear Machu Picchu being called the ‘Lost City of the Incas’. It is one of the few pre-Columbian ruins found nearly intact. Just 50 miles from Cuzco, this site is still a mystery to many, and questions are still unanswered as to why it was abandoned and what it was built for. Some will say, though, it was built to serve as a royal retreat.

Rio De Janeiro, Brazil

Christ the Redeemer

This symbolic statue of Jesus Christ stands 98 feet tall, watching over the city of Rio de Janeiro. When up close, you appreciate the enormity and beauty of Christ the Redeemer. As you enjoy the city of Rio and its wonderful buzz and culture, you will see the magnificent statue towering above, and it is an absolute must to venture up the 2.310-foot summit and see for yourself why this has become one of the most famous sites of the world.
