Overview

New South Wales is Australia’s most-visited state – and for good reason. It’s home to some of the country’s best beaches, a world-class food scene, the nation’s oldest wine region, UNESCO-listed natural spectacles and incredible wildlife experiences. The capital of New South Wales, Sydney, needs no introduction but with so much going on in this diverse capital, you need to allow yourself enough time to make the most of it. Our Sydney and Beyond adventure starts with five nights in the buzzing state capital, giving you plenty of time to get under the skin of this metropolis of cool.

And what better time to visit Sydney than during Vivid Sydney? This festival of art, innovation and technology takes over the city for 23 days and nights. You can see the Sydney Opera House transformed into a kaleidoscope of colour, or jump on a harbour cruise for some amazing photo opportunities of the Vivid lights illuminating the water. Don’t miss the eight-kilometre Light Walk, which stretches all the way from the Opera House to Central Station, with 47 installations and 200 sculptures along the way. Or why not climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge at night to witness Sydney sparkle from a totally unique vantage point?

Vivid celebrates its twelfth year in 2024 and the festival is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever. What’s more, the festival is free for all, so you can explore Sydney’s neighbourhoods in a way you never have before.

After the thrill of Vivid, the next eight days of your trip will be spent discovering more of New South Wales. You can explore at your leisure in a fully-equipped motorhome – complete with your own shower and kitchen. You’ll collect and drop off your motorhome in Sydney, but what you do in-between is up to you. Why not head inland to discover the UNESCO-listed Blue Mountains, and sample fine wines in the Hunter Valley? Or, for incredible beaches, head south to Jervis Bay, where crystal-clear waters and pure white sands await. Whatever you’re into, New South Wales has plenty to keep you entertained.

Days 1-5

Sydney

Welcome to Sydney! With five nights here, you’ll have plenty of time to see the major sights and explore. Plus, your trip coincides with Vivid Sydney – a brilliant 23-night festival of art and technology, which transforms Sydney into a kaleidoscope of colour.

If it’s your first time in Sydney, be sure to check out the city’s icons. The buzzing Circular Quay is a great place to start, where you’ll find the Sydney Opera House, great bars and restaurants, and fantastic views of Sydney Harbour Bridge. From there, you’ll just be a short stroll from The Rocks – a historic neighbourhood filled with laneways, markets, cafés and pubs. Plus, the Royal Botanic Gardens is just a stone’s throw away. During Vivid Sydney, all these landmarks are light up with bright projections, which make for some incredible photo opportunities.

Want to get a taste of Sydney’s relaxed beach lifestyle? The coastal walk from Bondi to Coogee is a must-do. Popular with locals and tourists alike, this lovely route boasts outstanding sea views – and you can go for a swim, along the way. Make sure you spend some time on Bondi Beach, too. You could try a surfing lesson, or simply sit on the sands and watch the local surfers in action.

One of Sydney’s biggest draws is its world-class culinary scene. You can discover flavours from across the globe, everywhere from fine-dining restaurants, to stylish bars with picture-perfect backdrops. Sydney is also famously diverse and welcoming. Aside from Vivid Sydney, the annual Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras is held every year from mid-February to early March.

Days 6-13

Campervan adventure

On day six, it’s time to collect your fully-equipped motorhome – complete with its own toilet, shower and kitchen – and set off to explore New South Wales. Over the next seven days, you can travel at your own pace, stop off whenever you wish, and choose where to spend each night.

As New South Wales is so diverse, your itinerary options are endless. Want to hit the beach? South of Sydney, the region of Jervis Bay is home to little-known Hyams Beach, which is thought to have the world’s whitest sand. Or how about a trip north? You could follow the Pacific Highway along the coastline up to one of Australia’s most popular coastal towns, Byron Bay. Or you could head inland from Sydney to check out the dramatic Blue Mountains and popular Hunter Valley wine region. Whatever route you take, you’re sure to have an adventure.
