Get a feel for Thai city life and spend time in the country's charming Northern region on this fantastic trip. Start your adventure in the epic capital city of Bangkok, with its towering skyscrapers and bustling street food markets. Then you'll head north to the mountainous regions of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai.
After landing in Bangkok, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to sights to see. You can cruise down the Chao Phraya, hit up the lively Khao San Road, and marvel at the Grand Palace. Next on the agenda is Chiang Mai. This inland city is surrounded by rolling hills and mountains, and boasts a pretty old town surrounded by a moat. Finally, it’s time for Chiang Rai, close to the borders of Laos and Myanmar. This is a great place to sample regional cuisine and interact with local hill-tribe communities.
Kick-start your trip in style in Thailand’s vibrant capital, Bangkok. Expect soaring skyscrapers, enormous shopping malls and endless markets, intermingled with ancient palaces and peaceful canals. By day, why not explore one of the floating markets? After dark, head down to the infamous Khao San Road to discover endless bars, restaurants, and street-food vendors. For a more refined evening, visit one of the city's magnificent rooftop bars for cocktails and spectacular views of the sparkling skyline.
Prefer to avoid the crowds? Learn about the history of this fascinating capital as you browse its museums and regal temples in Bangkok Old Town, known as Rattankosin. Or, if you're seeking a tranquil oasis, Lumpini Park's manicured lawns and manmade lake have you covered. One of the best ways to take in the city sights is to sail down the Chao Phraya River, which flows through the heart of the city. Be sure to stop off at the spectacular Grand Palace and the sacred Temple of the Emerald Buddha, too.
Your second stop is the northern city of Chiang Mai. Thailand’s 'Second City' is best known for rolling green hills, unique cuisine, and some of the country’s oldest and most ornate temples. Check out Old Town Chiang Mai, with its own moat and no less than 30 temples. As you stroll around, you can expect to see barefoot monks in their bright orange gowns going about their daily morning routine. And, in the evening, street vendors selling traditional handicrafts give you ample opportunities to shop for souvenirs. To experience the modern side of the city you’ll need to head to Nimmanhaemin Road, which is lined with galleries, boutiques, restaurants, and coffee shops.
Further outside the city, you'll soon discover dense jungle, sprinkled with pretty waterfalls and hiking trails. For keen walkers who visit in the dry season, Doi Suthep Monk Trail is a popular route – it leads to Wat Pha Lat Temple, with terrific views en route to the summit. Lastly, no trip to Chiang Mai would be complete without a visit to one of its famous elephant sanctuaries. These ethical centres have been rescuing and rehabilitating these giants for years. Elephant rides aren’t permitted, but you can admire these beautiful creatures and learn about the efforts being made to protect them.
Your whistle-stop Thai adventure concludes in Thailand’s northernmost city, Chiang Rai, close to the borders of Myanmar and Laos. Chiang Rai is often overlooked in favour of better-known Chiang Mai – but that’s all part of its charm. You can cycle through deserted rice paddies, raft down rivers, and hike through majestic mountains.
An hour from the city centre, in the gorgeous gardens at Doi Tung, you can feel the cool mountain air and stroll across manicured lawns. You'll soon see why this was once a favourite spot of the Thai royal family. You could also enjoy a cultural experience, when you visit one of the many hill-tribe communities. And you can learn more about their cultural practices and beliefs at Chiang Rai’s Hill-Tribe Museum.
The White Temple is an absolute must-see whilst in Chiang Rai. This half-temple, half-gallery was created by one of the country’s most famous artists, Chalermchai Kositpipat. The all-white structure features small pieces of glass within the plaster, which sparkle in the sun. Inside, why not take some time to admire the contemporary artwork on display?
