The Beekman Arms is said to be one of America’s oldest inns, having first opened its doors in 1766. It’s also seen some famous faces in that time, including George Washington and Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1979, over 200 years after Beekman Arms first opened, Delamater Inn was added into the mix. Gothic in style, this additional building features all sorts of striking architectural features.
With oak beams and original flooring, the Beekman’s Tavern has remained relatively unchanged in over 200 years. A cosy spot for lunch or dinner, this place has a choice of atmospheric dining rooms, plus a bright greenhouse in the garden. On the menu, you’ll find tasty bites such as juicy burgers, fresh fish, and hearty mac ‘n’ cheese. The tavern is also said to be where Vice President Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton quarrelled in 1804, before their fatal duel.
About a two-hour drive north of New York City, the town of Rhinebeck has lots of interesting sights and attractions to explore during your stay. Make sure you visit the Vanderbilt Estate, where you’ll find a gold room with an opulent ceiling. You should also head to Hyde Park to take in views from the White Bridge, one of the first Melan arch bridges built in the US. There’s also a selection of museums here, as well as the FDR Presidential Library and Museum.
A colonial tap room with overhead beams, an open fireplace and a charming bar, this place is open seven days a week. Lunch and dinner are served every day, and brunch is also available on Sundays. Take your pick from the cosy dining rooms or, in summer, why not dine in the garden greenhouse?
As these two inns merged into one in 1979, you can choose from a selection of rooms across various buildings. Opt for the old charms of The Old Firehouse at the Beekman Arms, or enjoy the original Carriage House at Delamater House. If you’re looking for more modern comforts, then book a room in Montgomery House, which was only built in 2014.
