There's lots to should about when it comes to the Northern Territory and South Australia but, for this email, we've picked our top two must-see sights from each state. In the Northern Territory, in the heart of Watarrka National Park, you’ll find Kings Canyon – a majestic destination featuring 300-metre high sandstone walls, palm-filled crevices, and views that stretch across the desert. If you head to the Top End, a visit to Nourlangie Rock in Kakadu National Park is a must. It's perhaps most famous for its stunning rock paintings that document life as far back as 20,000 years ago.
Over in South Australia, don't miss Wilpena Pound, a huge natural amphitheatre located within the breath-taking Flinders Ranges National Park. For the best views, take a scenic flight over Wilpena Pound and enjoy an unforgettable experience. While you're in the area, make sure you visit the Painted Desert, another amazing site. Marvel at the rocky outcrop of large and small hills, which peak above the flat, desert landscape.
For a one-of-a-kind experience in South Australia, head to Gawler Ranges and spend a few days at Kangaluna Camp. This place is full of wildly-beautiful Outback scenery, with contrasting colours of red sands, grey gorges and the glistening-white Lake Gairdner. Look out for wild koalas, sea lions and dolphins. Plus, this is one of a few places where you can see three larges species of kangaroo together. And, for added adventure, go glamping in the camp's luxury safari tents - perfect for nature lovers who want to experience some of South Australia’s finest scenery and wildlife.
Up in the Northern Territory take a short, 30-minute scenic flight from Darwin to Bamurru Plains for an incredible wilderness experience. You’ll be staying on a working buffalo station, surrounded by wetlands, which are teeming with birds and wildlife. You can enjoy free twice-daily safaris, which include quad-bike adventures, game drives, river cruises and guided walks. The wildlife here is diverse, with wallabies, wild horses, buffalo, crocodiles and over 200 bird species. After a day of wildlife spotting, unwind in the infinity-edge pool, before sitting down to an exceptional dinner made using native and locally-sourced ingredients.
The Explorers Way has been dubbed one of Earth’s greatest, long-distance drives. On this epic 3,016-kilometre route, you’ll see some of Australia’s most iconic attractions and some lesser-known, hidden wonders, too. Starting in the National Park City of Adelaide, you’ll head across to the wildlife haven of Kangaroo Island. Then, you'll travel north through the vineyards of the Clare Valley, followed by the South Australian Outback scenery of the Flinders Ranges. Hit the Stuart Highway in Port Augusta, discover the opal-mining town of Coober Pedy, then explore the amazing Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.
Journey to the soaring Kings Canyon, travel through Alice Springs, and venture into the Top End’s national parks. In Nitmiluk, explore the monsoon rainforest and Aboriginal rock art, before driving north along Natures Way to Kakadu - a UNESCO World Heritage site with outstanding natural and cultural values. Finally, you’ll reach Australia’s northernmost city, Darwin. The Explorer’s Way has it all. From ocean to outback, wildlife to wine, UNESCO-listed wonders to the world’s oldest living culture, this really is the road trip of a lifetime.
