0203 944 2201This week, it’s our lesser-known destinations’ time to shine! In this Escape Edition, we’re introducing you to some of our smaller, newer destinations. They’re not as famous as some others, but they certainly pack a punch. From cities in the Arizona Desert, to a spice island in the Indian Ocean, to one of the smallest Caribbean isles, discover somewhere new with Travelbag.
Just a 20-minute drive from the heart of Phoenix, you’ll find the sun-soaked city of Scottsdale. Blurring the lines between past and present, this place is peppered with slick art galleries, top-notch hotels and retro landmarks. One minute, you could be browsing the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, and the next you could be admiring an age-old church built by the city’s first Catholic settlers. You’ll feel like you’ve travelled through time in Old Town Scottsdale, as you stroll past a Western-inspired saloon and cowboy-style shops. By contrast, if you venture further out of the city, you’ll find dozens of world-class golf courses, including the award-winning TPC Scottsdale.
As a desert city, Scottsdale also serves up lots of outdoor adventures. You can explore McDowell Sonoran Preserve, the largest urban preserve in the country, where the trails are ideal for hiking and biking. Or don your trainers and trek to the top of Camelback Mountain for sweeping views of the desert. Prefer to see some historic sites? Head to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West to admire the seamless integration of the Sonoran Desert with mid-century design.
Although the island of Aruba is only 20 miles long, it’s packed with a huge selection of sandy beaches, all-inclusive resorts, and endless activities. Ribboned with mile-long stretches of white sand, this picture-perfect island is all about the beach. Enjoy the bliss that comes with a totally-free schedule as you sunbathe, swim, or snorkel the day away. Or keep busy with watersports. From jet-skiing and kite-surfing, to bodyboarding and kayaking, there’s plenty for you to get stuck into. You can even go on a submarine expedition, discovering shipwrecks and coral reefs that lie 130 feet below the ocean’s surface.
If you'd like your Aruba holiday to be more action-packed, there’s plenty to keep you occupied. You can explore gravity-defying rock bridges, pools and caves at Arikok National Park. Or, why not embark on a thrilling ATV tour over the island’s rough and rugged terrain? Perfect for travellers of any age, Aruba holidays really are the stuff of dreams.
Etihad Airways offer a huge network of flights all over the world, including the beautiful island of Zanzibar, off the coast of Tanzania.
Measuring just 24 miles wide and 52 miles long, Zanzibar isn’t big – but it offers a real tropical escape. The rich interior features indigenous forests, filled with chirping birds and cheeky monkeys. Spice farms are bursting with all sorts of plants, such as vanilla, nutmeg and black pepper. The coastal mangroves are ideal for kayaking adventures. And UNESCO-listed Stone Town is home to soaring cathedrals, grand mosques, vibrant markets, and maze-like laneways. And, if you want to see more of Tanzania, hopping over to the mainland couldn’t be easier.
But the island’s stunning beaches are the main attraction. Talc-white sands are brushed by the bath-warm Indian Ocean, while the bright coral reefs are teeming with marine life. You can snorkel with colourful fish, seahorses and turtles, go on dolphin-watching trips, and try your hand at kite-surfing. Or you could simply relax, with a good book and an ice-cold beer.
