Where's hot in August?

Get more inspiration

It’s no secret that Europe is hot in August.

In fact, if you’re looking for a holiday that’s a little more low-key, there are plenty of stunning coastal spots that you can fly to in a few hours or less. But for those seeking an adventure-filled summer holiday, a week on the Costa del Sol might not cut it. To help you get inspired, we’ve compiled a list of long-haul destinations that are simply perfect in August. Take a look.

Hawaii

Defined by its lush rainforest and dramatic, cliff-laden coastline, the scenery in Hawaii truly is something else. Thanks to its wet, tropical climate, these islands stay fully saturated all year round, boasting shades of emerald green and azure. And sure, a bit of rain is no bad thing, but if you’re wanting to avoid torrential showers, August is the month to go. At this time of year, the average temperature is 27°C, ideal for exploring Hawaii’s great outdoors. Go snorkelling with sea turtles, hike along active volcanoes, or take a helicopter tour over the flora-filled expanse. And, when you fancy some down-time, you can make your way to one of the islands’ spectacular black-sand beaches.

Tanzania

An expedition to the snow-capped summit of Mount Kilimanjaro features on a fair few bucket-lists. A geological mammoth measuring almost 6,000 meters tall, the climb to the top is by no means an easy one. Whist you may be tempted to take on the challenge, beyond the mountain, there’s plenty to see and do in Tanzania if you’re after a more relaxing holiday. August, as well as being gloriously warm and sunny, is a fantastic time for seeing some of the country’s jaw-dropping wildlife. You can catch herds of wildebeest as they make their annual migration through Serengeti National Park. Or, you can head to Lake Natron, where pink-feathered flamingos begin to gather to lay their eggs. The weather's pretty lovely, too - with average highs of 26°C.

Samoa

Lying just further east of Fiji in the Polynesian region of the Pacific Ocean, Samoa is an archipelago made up of 16 islands. Pristine, sandy beaches are scattered abundantly across this mesmeric country and, wherever you go, you’ll never be too far from a patch of ocean that’s impossibly clear. The people here are great, too. Known for having a strong connection to traditional Samoan culture, as well as being faultlessly hospitable and kind, you’re bound to receive a warm welcome. In August, the weather is hot and sunny, with temperatures ranging between 24 and 29°C depending on which island you’re travelling to. For endless days sunbathing, snorkelling and swimming in the picture-worthy To-Sua Ocean Trench, a Samoa holiday is the perfect option.

San Francisco

A Californian city that’s known for it’s ‘Indian Summers’, San Francisco experiences its hottest temperatures between late-August and October. Although not quite as scorching as the other destinations on this list, in August, San Francisco welcomes weather that’s ideal for all sorts of city exploring. With lots of sunshine and virtually zero rain, you can see the dazzling Golden Gate Bridge in all it’s glory, or take a scenic stroll up Lombard Street, whilst the pastel-pink flowers are in full bloom. And, your adventure doesn’t have to end when the sun goes down, as you can find loads of swanky rooftop bars throughout the city- just make sure to get there in time for sunset!
