Still need some convincing? Have a read of our top 10 reasons why you should visit Ras Al Khaimah.
Although Ras Al Khaimah does have its share of modern buildings and swanky hotels, it’s the natural scenery that takes the crown. First off, you’ve got the rugged Hajar mountain range on your doorstep, with the UAE’s highest peak – Jebel Jais – just an hours’ drive away from the city centre. You also have the surrounding desert landscape to explore, home to golden, sun-lit dunes that stretch for miles. You’ve even got mangroves nearby, where you’ll see emerald trees and bright pink flamingos poking above the steely water. And last, but certainly not least, who could forget about Ras Al Khaimah’s incredible beaches?
Occupied as far back as 5,000BC, Ras Al Khaimah is one of the oldest Emirates in the UAE. So, if you’re looking to dive into history and culture during your Middle East holiday, you’ve come to the right place. You can see a range of exciting exhibits at the National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah, or you can pay a visit to one of the fascinating archaeological sites. Dhayah Fort is a bit of a beauty spot, whereas the Suwaidi Pearls Farm is worth a daytrip if you fancy learning about this Emirate’s pearl-farming history.
Although a Ras Al Khaimah holiday is good for anyone who wants to escape the hustle and bustle of Dubai, there’s still plenty of excitement to be had here, too. Home to the world’s longest zipline – measuring the length of 31 football fields – it’s become a go-to destination for thrill-seekers. Take on the challenge and soar above the spectacular Arabian Gulf, reaching speeds of up to 150kmph. And, if you manage that no sweat, you can tackle even greater heights at the Al Jazirah Aviation Club, learning how to fly your very own small plane.
Whether you want to kick back in your own private villa, or you fancy staying in an all-inclusive resort, you’ll only get the very best in Ras Al Khaimah. One option is to venture into the heart of the desert, with a stay at Ritz Carlton Ras Al Khaimah Al Wadi Desert. Sporting an ‘old-school luxury’ feel, it’s the perfect base for all sorts of desert activities – from sunset camel treks, to late-night stargazing. Alternatively, you can opt to stay by the beach. Take your pick from a fantastic range of resorts, offering dream-worthy ocean views, plush rooms and suites, and modern, fine-dining restaurants.
If we’re talking geography, Ras Al Khaimah is located roughly 100 kilometres north of Dubai, sat snugly within the United Arab Emirates. As with most destinations in the Middle East, here, hot and sunny weather is a guarantee whenever you go. This Emirate also experiences very little rainfall, so – coming from the UK – it’s easy to see why it’s so appealing. Most people choose to visit in the winter months, between November and February. Temperatures will remain in the mid-to-high twenties, ideal for days spent lounging by the beach or pool, but not too sweltering for those wanting to keep active outdoors.
Ras Al Khaimah is a premier shopping destination. So, if you ever do need some time out from the heat during your holiday, why not have a mooch around one of the amazing malls? You’ve got three main locations to choose from during your time in this Emirate: RAK Mall, Al Hamra Mall, and Manar Mall. Here, you’ll find an eclectic mix of designer outlets, clothing shops, restaurants and cafes. You’ll also find a range of entertainment venues, from cinemas, to kids play areas and arcades – there’s something for every age to enjoy.
In a similar vein, you’re spoilt for choice for things to do on a family holiday to Ras Al Khaimah. You’ve also got plenty of options when it comes to where you can stay. There are loads of family-friendly hotels and resorts scattered about, and on-site kids’ clubs, aqua parks, and basketball courts aren’t hard to come by. But, if you do want to venture away from your resort, you’re also in luck. Set out on an epic 4X4 adventure through the desert, try some watersports by the beach, or pay a visit to the Bear Grylls Explorers Camp.
The resorts around Ras Al Khaimah are known for their excellent restaurants. Cooking up all kinds of culinary creations, top chefs draw inspiration from all over the world. From New York grills, to teppanyaki tables, and Mediterranean pizzerias, there really is something to suit every taste. But, whilst you’re here, sampling some typical Emirati food is a must. A popular dish is Samak Mashwi – barbequed fish flavoured with date paste and a symphony of other spices. And another must-try is Manakish – a delicious, soft flatbread topped with thyme, cheese and meat.
In Ras Al Khaimah – and the wider Middle East – hospitality runs deeper than simply being a good host. Here, making guests feel at home is ingrained in the culture. You might have even heard of the term ‘Karam’, referring to the act of generous hospitality, something which is held in very high regard. So, needless to say, you can be sure you’ll be greeted with a very warm welcome upon your arrival in Ras Al Khaimah. A ‘nothing’s too much trouble’ attitude is far from uncommon, and it’s one of the main reasons people keep coming back to the UAE.
It might come as a surprise, but trips to Ras Al Khaimah are typically less expensive compared to the other Emirates. Five-star resorts boast pretty competitive prices. And, when it comes to flights, the cost might not be as hefty as you’d expect. December and January are the peak months, but you can avoid this time for better value rates. And, just to top it off, the travel time is really quite speedy. Catch a seven-hour direct flight into Dubai, followed by a 45-minute scenic taxi drive to your Ras Al Khaimah hotel of choice.
