Indonesian islands that are alternatives to Bali

Get more inspiration

It’s no secret that Bali has a lot to offer.

So it’s no surprise that this great-value Indonesian island, with its abundance of temples, yoga retreats, rich jungles and surf spots, is super popular. Over six million people visited Bali in 2019. And, while this tropical island remains incredibly beautiful, it’s a lot busier than it once was.

If you’re seeking a quieter, more authentic experience, consider looking beyond Bali and venturing to other islands in Indonesia. As the world’s largest archipelago, this beguiling country has more than 17,000 isles – so we’ve rounded up some of our favourites.

Lombok

Only 35 kilometres east of Bali, laidback Lombok has certainly increased in popularity in recent years – yet it sees just a fraction of the tourists that flock to its nearby neighbour. The island’s unspoilt landscape is dominated by the imposing Gunung Rinjani – Indonesia's second-highest volcano. This giant peak offers a fantastic multi-day hike, during which you can see incredible sunrises and camp beside a crater lake.

The south coast, meanwhile, is a surfer’s paradise. You'll find dozens of pristine bays, including Lombok’s famous pink beach – one of only a handful of pink-sand beaches in the world. Budget-friendly accommodation is available across the island. But, if you’re seeking luxury, head to the secluded northwest coast, where you’ll find upscale hotels like Oberoi Beach Resort, Lombok.

The Gili Islands

This trio of tiny isles is easily accessible from both Bali and Lombok, with fast boats to the Gili Islands leaving multiple times a day. Fringed by white-sand beaches and lapped by turquoise water, all three islands are strikingly beautiful – but each has its own distinct character.

Gili Trawangan – or Gili T as it’s more commonly known – is the biggest. Known for its vibrant nightlife, it boasts plenty of swish restaurants and relaxed beachside cafés. Gili Meno, on the other hand, is more tranquil and traditional, making it popular with honeymooners and older travellers. Our favourite, though, is Gili Air, as it offers the perfect balance of the other two. Plus, it has the best scuba diving, snorkelling and freediving, with exciting underwater worlds just off the east coast.

Flores & Komodo

Remote and rugged Flores is drastically different from other Indonesian islands. It’s just an hour’s flight from Denpasar, but few visitors to Bali venture here. This means the island remains fairly undeveloped – but, if you’re willing to sacrifice a few creature comforts, you’ll be well-rewarded for their efforts.

Flores is made up of lush jungles and scenic beaches. But the most spectacular site is Mount Kelimutu, in Kelimutu National Park. This extinct volcano has three crater lakes at its summit, which change colour depending on the light.

Elsewhere, the port of Labuan Bajo is the gateway to Komodo National Park. Spread across the islands of Komodo, Rinca and Padar, the park is home to the world’s biggest lizard, the Komodo dragon. Take a daytrip to see these amazing creatures, and go diving, snorkelling and hiking while you're there.

Java

Home to some 140 million people, Java is the beating heart of the country and where you’ll find Jakarta, Indonesia’s sprawling capital. It’s a city of contrasts, where modern buildings stand alongside colonial-era architecture, and air-conditioned megamalls rub shoulders with traditional markets. Embrace the chaotic charm, as you discover top museums, diverse restaurants, and vibrant nightlife.

Like most Indonesian islands, Java also has beautiful beaches. Pangandaran is the most popular, while nearby Batu Karas is a quieter alternative. But, for a true desert island experience, head to the Karimunjawa Islands. This archipelago of 27 coral-fringed isles is as close to paradise as you’re ever likely to get. Largely free from visitors, the white-sand beaches are dotted with palm trees and lapped by azure waters, and feel like a real haven of tranquillity.
