Rocky Mountaineer's Journey through the Clouds

Our 10-Day Eastbound Journey Through The Clouds itinerary combines a GoldLeaf Service train journey on Rocky Mountaineer with two iconic Canadian cities. You’ll begin your journey on Canada’s West Coast and spend three days touring Vancouver (from the famous Gastown to the awe-inspiring Stanley Park – this city is filled with extraordinary sights). Then, the train follows the Fraser River eastbound to Kamloops for your overnight stay. From Kamloops, you’ll head to the alpine town of Jasper. Next, you’ll travel to Banff National Park, a haven of dramatic mountains, picturesque lakes, and charming villages, before concluding the adventure in pretty Calgary.

Here’s a two-day travel diary from our Destination Manager, Katie, who recently returned from her journey through the clouds, experiencing the Vancouver to Jasper route.

We enjoyed a warm welcome at the Rocky Mountaineer train station in Vancouver. Once settled in our seats, a friendly Host provided us with coffee and breakfast pastries while we looked out at mesmerising views as the train departed for Kamloops. It was nice to see the train station staff wave off the train. Because we were in GoldLeaf Service, we vacated our seats on the uppermost deck and proceeded to the dining area downstairs. All the food served was delicious! Talking of sights, day one’s scenery ranged from southern British Columbia’s huge glittering skyscrapers in Vancouver to hilly terrain which resembled a desert.

After a comfortable night’s sleep in Kamloops, we hopped back on the Rocky Mountaineer and enjoyed their warm hospitality and delicious food all over again! This time, we were going to Jasper, an alpine town of natural wonders and intriguing attractions. It wasn’t long before we were called to the dining area and served a wonderful meal, which began with pastries and was followed by a delicious breakfast of our choice. Aside from mouth-watering dishes, our second day presented more spectacular scenery. The highlights were Pyramid Falls and Mount Robson (the highest peak of the Canadian Rockies). When the train arrived in Jasper, the crew said goodbye before we departed to our accommodation, where our luggage was already waiting.

Choosing a level of service that best suits your requirements is vital. Both GoldLeaf and SilverLeaf Service provide meals, snacks, and drinks with breathtaking surroundings and incredible attention to detail — but there’s a key differentiation between the two. The bi-level GoldLeaf Service coach is visibly taller than SilverLeaf, with full-dome windows on the upper level. The lower level has reclining seats, an outdoor viewing platform, and a dining area where the culinary crew whips up multi-course, gourmet meals. Meanwhile, SilverLeaf Service delivers delicious meals, drinks, and snacks straight to your seat. Everything is conveniently located on one level, meaning you can enjoy scenic views without having to get up! If you need to stretch, don’t worry; this coach provides ample space to stand and admire vistas through large windows.

The perfect balance between SilverLeaf and GoldLeaf Service is SilverLeaf Plus. However, this is only available on the Rocky Mountaineer’s Rockies to the Red Rocks Route, where you can enjoy an elevated dining experience plus signature cocktails in the newly renovated lounge area.

You’ll choose a meal from a menu featuring locally sourced ingredients. Travelling a Canadian route? The bi-level GoldLeaf Service serves mouth-watering dishes in the lower-level dining area. These may include Pacific salmon served with garlic herb rice or short ribs braised in a British Columbia pale ale with locally grown potatoes. Pair your food with local wines, craft beers, or just a relaxing cup of tea. All beverages — both alcoholic and non-alcoholic — are included. While on board, you’ll also be treated to morning and afternoon snacks. You can chat with other guests, make new friends, and share your experiences while treating yourself to melt-in-your-mouth scones or freshly baked cookies.

“My favourite meal was the lemon and lavender posset served at lunch on day one – not only was it delicious but beautifully presented. Breakfast was delicious on both days. All food was made on the train with locally sourced ingredients.”
