Malaysia is so vast that you can enjoy a multi-centre holiday within its borders – and we’d definitely recommend visiting two, if not three, destinations on your trip. With a world-class capital city, some of Asia’s best beaches and pristine rainforests, a holiday to Malaysia can be as simple or varied as you like.
Kuala Lumpur makes the perfect starting point for your adventure, where futuristic skyscrapers soar above traditional temples and vibrant markets. A four-hour drive or a short flight will get you to Penang, home to UNESCO-listed George Town, which is jam-packed with bright buildings, colonial architecture and incredible street food. For a restful retreat look no further than Langkawi. An island encircled by turquoise waters and white-sand beaches, this is the perfect place to soak up some sunshine or discover the delights of the coral reefs just off shore.
Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur, is a great place to start your holiday. Multicultural Kuala Lumpur is a melting pot of Malay, Chinese and Indian cultures, reflected in both the architecture and cuisine. Go up the iconic Petronas Twin Towers, explore colourful Chinatown, and visit the grand Batu Caves, which are adorned with age-old Hindu shrines. There’s a variety of festivals and events throughout the year in KL, too, so there’s bound to be something going on while you’re there.
No holiday to Malaysia would be complete without some great food and lashings of culture. Luckily, both can be found on the island of Penang. Considering it’s just eight miles wide and 16 miles long, it sure packs a punch. The food scene is one of its biggest draw cards, with hawker food carts, fine dining and everything in between. Penang is also home to UNESCO World Heritage-listed George Town – a vibrant, colonial town with plenty of narrow laneways to explore.
What better way to finish your Malaysian adventure than to while away the hours chilling on some of the countries best beaches. The island of Langkawi is well known for its powdery sands and fish-filled coral reefs, along with ancient rainforests and of course, tropical sunshine. Relax under a palm tree with a good book, or don your hiking boots and explore the island’s rainforest interior.
