Tanzania is renowned for its sheer amount of wildlife, and the variety of it. There are more than four million wild animals in Tanzania, with 430 different species and subspecies. And the country is home to around a fifth of Africa’s large mammal population.

Serengeti is the oldest national park in the country and is where you can see the world-famous wildebeest migration. Lake Manyara was dubbed the “loveliest lake in Africa” by our Ernest Hemingway, and it’s certainly worth a visit. This alkaline lake attracts baboons, hippos, elephants, buffalo and other wild animals. It covers up to 200 square kilometres of land during the wet season, but is almost completely dry when the rain stops.

If you visit Lake Manyara during the wet season between November and May, you’ll have the best chance of observing local wildlife, including migratory flamingos who flock over.

After exploring Tanzania’s mainland, head to the paradise island of Zanzibar. This place is blessed with pale sand beaches, ornate Omani imperial architecture, and lively Islam-informed culture. It’s the perfect place to relax with a cocktail on the beach, after an action-packed tour of Tanzania.

Sink your toes into the sands of Nungwi, on the sleepy northwesternmost tip of the island, where you’ll find tropical gardens, sea-view restaurants and beach cottages. You can mingle with the locals, hop on a sundown cruise or embark on a deep-sea fishing excursion.

The Rock restaurant is a must-visit. Just as it sounds, this place is set on a rock sitting in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Found on the east coast, this famous eatery has become an icon of culinary excellence and a bucket-list dining spot. It often gets fully booked but, if you can nab a reservation, your taste buds will thank you for the experience.
