Day 1: Depart Chiang Mai – Chiang Rai
Leave Chiang Mai to head for Chiang Rai, stopping off to visit the Limestone cave complex at Chiang Dao. After a break for lunch, you’ll cross the Mae Kok River and visit the Akha and Yao hill tribe villages to gain an interesting insight into local life. You’ll also see the village inhabited by descendents of the Chinese nationalist army, who fled their homeland and settled on Thai soil; helping to create the diverse population for which the country is known.

Day 2: Chiang Rai
Spend the day exploring the area round the Golden Triangle, where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos meet. Visit the Hall of Opium to gain an insight into the opium trade before lunch at a local restaurant, and then head for the ancient city of Chiang Saen. After a visit to the Wat Chedi Luang temple, you’ll head for the mighty Mekong River for a cruise through the Golden Triangle region, admiring the stunning scenery before setting foot onto Lao territory on Dao Sao Island. You’ll then return to your hotel in the late afternoon, with the remainder of the day being at leisure.

Day 3: Chiang Rai – Tachileik – Kyaing Tong
After checking out from the hotel, head for Mae Sai and the border with Myanmar. After going through the required immigration checks, you will meet with a tour guide before taking the scenic drive from the border town of Tachileik to Kyaing Tong, making the most of the various photo opportunities along the way as you travel through beautiful mountain scenery. On arrival, you’ll enjoy a brief tour of the town, located close to Naung Tung Lake.

Day 4: Kyaing Tong
Enjoy a day exploring both Kyaing Tong and the surrounding area, starting with a visit to the village of Pin Tauk, where you’ll be able to see the church created by the Akha and Lahu people after they took the decision to convert to Baptism. You’ll then embark on a guided walk to take in many of the small villages in the area; taking in the dramatic views from Naung Seng, breaking for a packed lunch in a hut amongst the field and being welcomed with open arms by locals in Wanpin. After a visit to the final village of Nam Lin Kaung, you’ll return to your vehicle with a walk though rice and vegetable fields before heading back to the hotel.

Day 5: Kyaing Tong – Heho – Inle Lake
An early start affords the chance to pay a visit to Kyaing Tong Market to see the locals going about their business, while you can also enjoy a typical Shan breakfast in a noodle shop. Time permitting, you may also visit a local temple before travelling to the airport for the flight to Heho. On arrival, you’ll travel to the edge of Inle Lake before a boat ride to your hotel.

Day 6: Inle Lake
Explore the 5-day market if it is visiting on the day of your trip before heading out onto the water for an excursion by boat to enjoy the sights of the spectacular lake. While cruising in your boat, you can expect to see the famous leg rowers and the floating gardens where locals grow their produce, before paying a visit to the holy Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda and the boat workshop in Nampan village. With the opportunity to stop and view various locals plying their differing trades, your final visit will be to the Nga Phe Kyaung Monastery – which is one of the oldest on the lake and is famed for its jumping cats. Having spent the day on the water, you’ll then marvel at the beauty of sun set over the lake to end the day.

Day 7: Inle Lake – Heho – Yangon
Head back out onto the lake with a long-tailed boat ride to Indaing, passing through the village of Yawama before entering the tree-lined canal that takes you to your destination. Having had chance to see the local farmers at work on the side of the water, you’ll leave the lake for the short walk to the impressive ancient pagoda ruins of Nyaung Ohak and the weather beaten zedi at Shwe Inn Thein Paya. Having admired the views, you’ll return to the boat to head back to the lake. In the afternoon, you’ll leave Inle Lake to head for the airport in Heho before taking a flight to Yangon.

Day 8: Yangon
Having arrived in Yangon the previous evening, you’ll enjoy the chance to embark on a sight-seeing tour of the largest city in Myanmar. As well as the impressive Sule Pagoda, the tour will include the chance to visit the Chauk Htat Gyi reclining Buddha and the Shwedagon Pagoda; one of the most impressive religious monuments in the country. A late afternoon visit means you can see the monument at its best as the sun sets over the huge golden dome, while the chance to see the locals coming to pray is an experience not to be missed.
