Day 2: Colombo
Explore some of the colonial highlights of Colombo, which sit side-by-side with architecture and buildings that showcase modern Sri Lanka. The Gangaramaya Buddhist Temple, designed by Geoffrey Bawa and featuring a mix of architectural styles, will be the first port of call for a blessing from a local monk before continuing on to investigate locations like the Old Parliament House, the ancient Sri Kailawasanthan Swami Devasthanam temple and the colonial-style Town Hall located on the edge of Viharamahadevi Park.
  • Hotel Taj Samdura, or similar (B)
Day 3: Colombo – Kandy
Leaving Colombo after an early breakfast, you’ll call in at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, where there will be the opportunity to watch the animals bathe in a nearby river and to witness youngsters being fed. On arrival in Kandy, you’ll then head for the Temple of the Sacred Tooth, which is home to the most important Buddhist relics in Sri Lanka. While there, enjoy a traditional Puja Ceremony and witness a performance of Kandyan dancing and drumming, which originated in the area before spreading across the country.
  • Richmond House, or similar (B)
Day 4: Kandy
Enjoy an early morning visit to the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens just outside Kandy, where you can enjoy a stunning walk around the grounds surrounded by more than 4000 different species of plant. You’ll also pay a visit to some of the ancient religious buildings located in the area, such as the Gadaladeniya and Lankatillake temples, which feature numerous paintings and murals that hark back to the Kandyan Kingdom of years gone by. On the return to Kandy, enjoy a personal tour that will include the chance to visit the huge man-made lake and to explore the local markets.

Day 5: Kandy – Hill Country
Weather permitting, board a train for a stunning journey through Sri Lanka’s tea country as you climb up into the highlands, passing through lush plantations and through small hill villages as you journey to Nuwara Eliya, located at more than 6,000ft above sea level and regarded as a key location in Sri Lanka’s vitally important tea industry.
