Day 1: Durban - Pietermartizburg - Drakensberg
Begin your tour by departing the metropolitan city of Durban, travelling further inland to Pietermaritzburg, the administrative capital of the Kwa-Zulu Natal Province. Nestled against a backdrop of rolling countryside and forested hills, Pietermaritzburg is one of the most renowned and best preserved Victorian era cities in the world. On arrival, embark on a tour of the city which includes driving past Publicity House which happens to be opposite The Tatham Art Gallery, one of South Africa’s best galleries. Stop outside the Legislative Building which retains a link to the colonial heritage and past of the area. Visit the resplendent St Peter’s Cathedral and some of the byways and streets that make up The Church Street Mall; South Africa's largest pedestrian heritage retail area. See the iconic Mahatma Gandhi statue that stands outside the Colonial Building, an area famous for being targeted for his concerns about human rights. Continue on through the midlands to an area named Howick and the site late former President Nelson Mandela was captured in 1962, beginning his 27 year imprisonment and what he dubbed ‘the long walk to freedom’. The region known as the Natal Midlands is a stunning landscape that consists of vast acres of farmlands, picturesque little towns, and a splendid arts and crafts route, all set to amazing scenery for you to take in on the easy drive to your hotel in the Drakensberg range, where upon check in you can spend the remainder of the day at your own leisure.

Day 2: Drakensberg
Today you will have the opportunity to discover the beauty and splendour of Drakensberg before venturing to the uKhahlamba Drakensperg Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that holds important cultural significance. The mountains of the region offered shelter once upon a time to the San people for millennia before they were eradicated by the Zulus and white settlers, their legacy remains as paintings in the rocks which illustrate stories of sacred animals and journeys to the spirit realm. Visit Giants Castle for a 45 minute walk to the main caves where you can embark on a tour and talk of the paintings and relics on display at the museum. Afterwards, the remainder of the day can be spent as you see fit, enjoying the numerous facilities of the hotel or relaxing.

Day 3: Drakensberg - Spioenkop - Dundee - Isandlwana
Check out of the hotel after breakfast and then proceed to the summit of Spioenkop Mountain where you will be regaled on the story of the Anglo-Boer 9-day battle that took place in 1900 which Louis Botha, Winston Churchill and Mohandas Ghandi, later to become the Mahatma were all witness to. Continue on to the town of Ladysmith, a crucial setting of the Anglo-Boer War that was under siege for 118 days. The Siege Museum holds many artefacts, documents, uniforms and firearms depicting the tumultuous era along with a diorama of the town of Ladysmith during the siege. Travel to your accommodation which rests at the centre of the English and Zulu battle sites where upon arrival you can enjoy a fantastic dinner.

Day 4: Isandlwana - Fugitives Drift - Rorkes Drift
Spend the day exploring some of the most famous battlefields of KwaZulu-Natal where your guide will recount stories of the Anglo Zulu War battle of Isandlwana where an entire British regiment was overpowered and annihilated by some 20,000 Zulu warriors within 2 hours. Continue on to Fugitives Drift, the resting site for Lieutenants Nevill Coghill, Teignmouth Melvill and others whose graves lie on the hillside overlooking the Mzinyathi (Buffalo) River. Finally, head on to Rorkes Drift, an area that saw outnumbered British soldiers fight off 4000 Zulus for 12 hours, a battle which saw 11 Victoria Crosses awarded to members of the regiment, the highest number awarded in any single battle. Return afterwards for dinner and an overnight stay at your lodge.

Day 5: Rorkes Drift - Battlefields - Hluhluwe
Begin the day with an early breakfast before journeying across numerous battle sites throughout KwaZulu-Natal to Hluhluwe where you will end your discovery with an African safari experience. Depending on your time of arrival, you can enjoy lunch followed by an open vehicle game drive in the afternoon where you will have the opportunity to catch glimpses of exciting game and wildlife while accompanied by professional rangers who have a vast knowledge of the flora, fauna and birdlife throughout the region.

Day 6: Hluhluwe
The day begins with an early morning game drive to catch the indigenous wildlife at their busiest before the heat of the African sun forces them to take shelter. Return afterwards to the lodge for breakfast after which the remainder of the day is yours to spend at your leisure. The lodge hosts a variety of soothing facilities including a spa (at own expense and subject to availability) for you to utilise. The day ends with another open vehicle game drive or alternatively a sundowner cruise along the St. Lucia wetlands, a world heritage site that serves as home to crocodiles, hippos and a range of prolific birds that rest along the river bank.

Day 7: Hluhluwe - Durban
The final day includes one last game drive followed by an enjoyable breakfast. Check out of the lodge and travel via the Elephant coast on your way back to Durban where the tour ends on arrival at either a Durban based hotel or at the King Shaka International Airport for your return flight home.
