escorted tour | New Zealand→ Call our experts for more details
Discover the staggering natural beauty of New Zealand on this 15 day adventure from Auckland to Christchurch. From the forests and beaches of the North Island to the mountains and fjords of the South, there’ll be plenty to take your breath away as you journey across the Land of the Long White Cloud.
From Auckland, you’ll journey north to the Matakohe Kauri Museum, which details the story of early European settlers though the lens of the Kauri industry. After marvelling at the size of the mighty Kauri tree, you’ll continue on to the Bay of Islands where you’ll stay for two nights. After getting settled in, you’ll enjoy a special Welcome Dinner this evening.
Home to 114 islands, the Bay of Islands is famed for its sheltered waters and untouched beaches. You’ll have a day at leisure to try a range of water activities, take a hike through the wilderness or learn about Maori culture at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds – the birthplace of New Zealand.
Today you’ll explore New Zealand’s finest maritime park on a cruise to Cape Brett and the famous Hole in the Rock – a distinctive sandstone arch formation on Motukokako Island. Along the way, keep your eyes peeled for marine life that resides in these waters, including dolphins, whales, seals and penguins. In the afternoon you’ll return to Auckland, where you’ll have some free time to relax before dinner.
Leaving Auckland, you’ll travel to the famous Waitomo Caves where a local guide will lead you through underground limestone caverns, dazzlingly illuminated by glow worms. You’ll then continue on to the Sulphur City, Rotorua, where you’ll visit Te Puia – New Zealand’s premier centre for M?ori cultural experiences. Spanning 70 hectares within the historic Te Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley, Te Puia is home to the world-famous P?hutu geyser, bubbling mud pools and a nationally-renowned school for carving, weaving and traditional arts. In the evening, you’ll enjoy a M?ori feast, prepared in the traditional Hangi style, and a cultural performance combining storytelling with entertainment.
You’ll spend another day in this geothermal wonderland where your sightseeing will continue with a visit to Agrodome – a 350-acre working farm with spectacular panoramic views of Lake Rotorua. During the famed Farm Show you’ll witness a sheep-shearing demonstration and have the opportunity to feed baby lambs and hand-milk a cow before watching a live dog trial. In the afternoon you could purchase a thrilling helicopter flight over the White Island to gain a bird’s-eye view of New Zealand’s most active volcano.
Today you’ll bid farewell to Rotorua and travel along the Thermal Explorer Highway towards Lake Taupo and the thundering Huka Falls. You’ll then continue south across the vast volcanic plateau of World Heritage-listed Tongariro National Park to Wellington. The evening is left free for you to independently discover the vibrant dining scene of New Zealand’s compact capital city.
This morning, take in a city sights tour which includes a visit to Te Papa – New Zealand’s incredibly innovative national museum. Afterwards, you’ll cruise across the Cook Strait, through the breathtaking Marlborough and Queen Charlotte Sounds, to Picton. A short drive will then bring you to Blenheim – a tiny town in the heart of the Marlborough wine region – where you’ll spend the night.
You’ll see some truly spectacular views today as you make your way over to the South Island’s wild and rugged west coast. As you leave Christchurch, the urban landscape will give way to the pastoral beauty of the Canterbury Plains, before morphing into the dramatic wilderness of the Southern Alps as you begin the ascent into the Main Divide. Your destination for today is Fox Glacier township in Westland Tai Poutini National Park.
With an entire day to spend as you please, you’ll have plenty of time to discover all that Queenstown has to offer. Take a leisurely stroll along the waterfront, cycle part of the Queenstown trail or test your limits with a skydive or bungee jump. Wine aficionados might enjoy a trip to the vineyards of the Central Otago region, or you can opt to join one of our exciting experiences, such as a cruise on the TSS Earnslaw steamship or a scenic gondola ride to the top of Bob’s Peak (both at own expense).
A stunning drive will take you around Lake Wakatipu, over rolling countryside and through temperate rainforest to the iconic Milford Sound – the most popular of all the fjords in Fiordland National Park. Here, you’ll board a boat and cruise the full length of the fjord, passing cascading waterfalls and sheer, glacier-carved cliffs. You’ll then return along the Milford Road to the town of Te Anau, where you’ll spend the night.
Today, you’ll journey through rolling Southland countryside toward the harbourside city of Dunedin. Take a guided tour of the 'Edinburgh of the South' before making a visit to Larnach Castle, which sits atop a hill overlooking the peninsula. Steeped in scandal and tragedy, this Gothic Revival residence is filled with magnificent antiques and offers great views out across the harbour. You can then enjoy some free time before dinner.
Journeying along the coast, you’ll see the unusual Moeraki Boulders, scattered like marbles along a stretch of sandy beach, and make a stop in Oamaru to admire some of New Zealand’s finest 19th-century architecture. After passing the brilliant blue waters of Lake Pukaki, you’ll detour to Mount Cook National Park, where you can marvel at Australasia’s highest mountain. In the afternoon you’ll arrive at your hotel on the shores of Lake Tekapo, where later on you’ll dine on fresh local produce during a memorable Farewell Dinner. (B)
This morning, pay a visit to the tiny stone Church of the Good Shepherd, perched on the edge of the lake, before travelling to Christchurch where your tour concludes. Transfers will be arranged to the airport or a central downtown location. (B)
