Overview

From the bright lights of Sydney to the golden sands of Coffs Harbour and the laidback coastal town of Byron Bay, this 11 day self-drive holiday takes you to the heart of the arts and culture scene of New South Wales. If fascinating culture, unique artwork and contemporary festivals are your thing then dive into this exciting multi-centre holiday to Australia.

 

Explore the vibrant city of Sydney with its endless events calendar, you are sure to find an exciting exhibition, performance or festival to enjoy. Head to the Sydney Opera House to catch an iconic operatic masterpiece of explore the National Art Gallery of New South Wales to take in the largest collection of Aboriginal art in the country.

 

Head north to Newcastle and its rich arts scene before taking to the coast where outdoor activities, marine adventures and cultural immersion awaits.

Days 1-4

Sydney

Arriving in Sydney you will be taken to your hotel in the funky district of The Rocks where you will spend the next three nights. On your first day we have included a Dreamtime tour of The Rocks, where your guide will take you on a leisurely walk through the area uncovering the authentic history of the Aboriginal people and how their traditions still impact life in modern day Sydney.

 

Spend the next three days immersing yourself in the rich arts and culture scene in the city. Visit one of the world's most famous architectural masterpieces, the Sydney Opera House. Book a tour for some behind the scenes intel or go and see one of the outstanding performances held throughout the year. Spend an afternoon in the Art Gallery of New South Wales, newly renovated and home to the largest collection of Aboriginal art in Australia. Head to the Royal Botanic Gardens to learn about the flora and fauna of Australia, why not pre-book an Aboriginal bush tucker tour to sample some of the traditional bush foods eaten by the Aboriginal people, accompanied by a First Nations Guide?

 

Look ahead to find out about events that may be on during your stay in Sydney. Vivid Sydney is a spectacular show of light installations, shows and art that lasts for three weeks in May and June each year and the National Indigenous Art Fair takes place in The Rocks each July, a two day festival of Indigenous art, song and dance.

Day 4

Sydney to Newcastle

Collect your car from downtown Sydney and begin your drive north to Newcastle. Why not stop on the way at Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park and take the Red Hands walking track? This short walk will take you to Red Hands Cave to see traditional Aboriginal ochre rock paintings, if you have time take the opportunity to explore further into this spectacular region. 

 

For a unique experience why not stop at Firescreek winery on the Central coast and join a local elder for a display of Aboriginal culture and storytelling in the beautiful gardens. See, learn about and taste Australian Native plants before enjoying a wine tasting with the Firescreek wine maker.

 

This afternoon arrive in Newcastle, where you spend the next three nights.

Days 5 & 6

Newcastle

As New South Wales' second largest city, Newcastle is a great spot to spend a few days as part of your self-drive adventure. Famed for its beautiful beaches Newcastle also offers plenty for the arts and cultural enthusiast to enjoy. 

 

With an events calendar packed with festivals, markets and performances, you are sure to find something to enjoy during your stay. Book in a comedy show or concert at the heritage-listed Civic Theatre, stroll along the Newcastle Memorial Walk or wander through the city seeking out the captivating street art. The Newcastle Art Gallery offers free entry and a huge collection of exciting art work, visit at the weekend to take advantage of the free guided tours.

 

Head to one of the local pretty beaches for some downtime, hire a bike to explore further or take to the ocean to snorkel with marine life. You could even try your hand at surfing, a popular pastime with the locals!

Days 6-8

Coffs Harbour

Located mid-way between Sydney and Brisbane, Coffs Harbour offers the perfect stop for some beach relaxation. With miles of golden sands and the laidback feel you would expect of a coastal resort, Coffs Harbour gives the great outdoors in spades.

 

Jump in your car for the short drive to Sealy Lookout where you will catch a spectacular vista over the coastline. Enjoy a coffee at the Aboriginal-run Nyanggan Gapi cafe before walking the Gumbali Track, this unique cultural experience shares the Gumbaynggirr creation story of Gumgali, the black goanna. Enjoy a contemporary re-telling of the story through sculpture and art as you walk the trail.

 

For something truly unique book a stand-up paddleboard tour with Wajaana Yaam Gumbaynggir Adventure Tours, or, for a wildlife adventure, head to the Coffs Coast Wildlife Sanctuary to learn more about how hundreds of marine animals are rescued each year, rehabilitated and re-introduced into the wild.

Days 8-11

Byron Bay

Your final stop is Byron Bay, a delightful seaside town just south of the New South Wales, Queensland border. Traditionally known for its relaxed vibe and surfer lifestyle Byron Bay still showcases its hippy history however these days you're likely to find award-winning restaurants, luxury properties and breweries creating delicious craft beers. 

 

Spend a day exploring the Tweed Head Regional Museum, only a 45 minute drive from Byron Bay and immerse yourself in the innovative exhibitions, a mix of heritage architecture and contemporary adaptations. With a year round program of fascinating events and workshops this museum offers a unique insight into Aboriginal culture and heritage as well as stunning grounds to explore.
