Sail through the heart of Central Europe on this Danube River cruise, as you venture through Hungary, Slovakia, Austria and Germany. Tick off the beautiful city of Budapest, discover diverse architecture in Bratislava, explore the ‘City of Waltzes’ Vienna, find the Sound of Music in Salzburg, and much more.
Your home for seven nights will be the S.S. Maria Theresa, named in honour of the great Hasburg ruler, Maria Theresa, who was one of Europe’s most well-loved and longest-reigning monarchs. This luxurious ships boasts opulent décor, an elegant style and indulgent dining options. Arrive in the beautiful city of Budapest. You'll be greeted at Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport and transferred to the S.S. Maria Theresa, where you can unpack, relax and spend the rest of the day at your leisure.
Spend the day exploring this magical city. You can enjoy a Panoramic Highlights Tour, where you can admire the Neo-Renaissance buildings of Andrassy Avenue, the beautiful castle district, the City Park and more. Plus, the tour includes a private concert at the Hungarian State Opera House. Alternatively, if you'd prefer to stretch those legs, opt for the Budapest walking tour with a local. You can get to know Budapest and sample its delicious cuisine at the same time. Visit a food hall in the Jewish district, sip a beer in one of ruin bars, and try delicious strudel in the Great Market Hall.
In the evening, you'll enjoy a special Captain’s Welcome Reception and Dinner, where you can reflect on the day’s activities with your fellow travellers.
Arrive in Bratislava and disembark for a walking tour with a local guide. Discover the blend of Gothic, Baroque and Art Deco buildings and learn the rich history of this Slovakian city. Alternatively, take a hike to Bratislava Castle, which takes pride of place on the city skyline and admire incredible views of the town below. Walk back via the Presidential Palace, the UFO Bridge and the historic Old Town.
Later in the day, you'll arrive in Vienna where you'll enjoy an evening performance of chamber music, featuring the works of the great composers like Brahms, Mozart and Schubert.
Today you can explore Vienna, a city revered for it art and music. Spend the morning browsing the world-renowned Vienna Art History Museum, followed by your choice of excursion. You can go on a city highlights tour, which ticks off all the city’s major landmarks including palaces, museums, City Hall and the Opera House. Or opt for a music and composers tour, which walks you through Vienna’s extraordinary musical history.
You'll have some free time this afternoon to discover the city at your leisure. Why not borrow a bike from the ship and cycle to Pater Park? Wonderful views await.
Continue along the Danube through Austria and stop in the pretty town of Dürnstein. Here, you can wander the cobblestone lanes, browse boutiques and see the castle ruins. Choose from a visit to one of the oldest wineries in Austria – which includes a wine-tasting – or visit a saffron workshop to educate your taste buds with saffron-flavoured treats like chocolate, jams and honey.
Next stop along the Danube is Melk. Pay a visit to Melk Abbey and its beautiful library which is home to over 100,000 volumes, and spend the rest of your day exploring Melk at your own pace.
En route to Salzburg, you'll stop in the town of Linz, where you can explore on foot with a local expert. Stop for a taste of a traditional Linzer Torte – a delicious buttery pastry made with ground nuts, filled with fruit preserve, and topped with a lattice crust. You’ll also visit a cider farm where you'll be treated to a delicious lunch and, of course, some house-made cider.
Continue onto the UNESCO World Heritage-listed city of Salzburg, where you'll dock for the night.
Depart the fairytale town of Salzburg and sail to Passau – a crossroad where the Dabube, Ilz and Inn rivers meet, and the home to Europe’s largest pipe organ! For your excursion today, you can choose between a bike ride along the River Inn or a hike along the River Ilz.
In the evening, you'll enjoy a special Captain’s Farewell Reception and Dinner.
It's time to disembark from S.S. Maria Theresa, and transfer to Munich Airport for your flight home.
