Overview

This comprehensive seven-day tour will see you uncover KwaZulu Natal’s fascinating heritage, visiting its eclectic highlights before experiencing the exhilaration of a game drive through a private reserve.

The KwaZulu Natal province is steeped in history and scattered with battlefields, from the struggles of the Zulu civil wars to their clashes with the Boers and the British.

Setting off from Durban, you’ll snake up through Pietermaritzburg, taking in views over the stunning rolling hills and rugged rocks of Central Drakensberg and visiting the ancient San rock paintings at Giant’s Castle.

Your journey continues on to the legendary battle sites of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift. You can also explore the famous Anglo-Boer war fields of Spioenkop, Colenso and the Siege of Ladysmith, which drew the likes of Winston Churchill, Louis Botha and Mahatma Gandhi onto the same stage.

Tick off your ‘must-see’ list, as your extensive exploration of KwaZulu Natal takes you from battlefields to museums, and from the Mahatma Ghandi statue to the city of Howick, where Nelson Mandela was captured. This is one of the country’s most significant regions which truly shaped the future of South Africa.

Day 1

Durban – Central Drakensberg – Pietermaritzburg – KwaZulu Natal Midlands

Your journey begins when you leave the cosmopolitan city of Durban and travel inland to Pietermaritzburg – the administrative capital of the KwaZulu Natal Province. Pietermaritzburg is set amid forested hills and the rolling countryside of the Natal Midlands and is one of the best-preserved Victorian cities in the world. You’ll enjoy a concise city tour – passing Publicity House, The Tatham Art Gallery, and the Legislative Building, St Peter's Cathedral and the charming lanes of the Church Street Mall. The Mahatma Gandhi statue is visited outside the Colonial Building – where Gandhi targeted many of his concerns about human rights issues.

Your journey continues through the Natal Midlands to Howick and the site where the late former President Nelson Mandela was captured in 1962, marking the start of his 27-year imprisonment.

Travel further through the Midlands – an appealing region filled with stretches of farmland, pretty little towns, a wonderful arts and crafts route and picturesque scenery. You’ll check into your hotel and have some time to relax before enjoying dinner.

Day 2

Central Drakensberg – Giant’s Castle – uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park

Today you’ll discover the awe-inspiring scenery of the Drakensberg, as well as learning about the UNESCO World Heritage site of uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park.

These mountains offered shelter to the San people for thousands of years before they were exterminated in clashes with the Zulus and white settlers. All the San left behind was their story – painted in the rock, in the shelters, the story of sacred animals and journeys to the spirit world. At Giant's Castle you’ll enjoy a walk to the main caves for a short tour and interpretation of the preserved paintings and artifacts on display in the museum.

You’ll spend the remainder of the afternoon relaxing at your hotel.

Day 3

Spioenkop Mountain – Ladysmith

Today you’ll make your way to the summit of Spioenkop Mountain. Here, your guide will bring to life the nine-day Anglo-Boer battle of 1900 – the third and bloodiest attempt by the British to relieve Ladysmith.

You’ll continue on to Ladysmith – a town which made world headlines at the end of the 19th century when it was besieged for 118 days during the most crucial stage of the Anglo Boer War. Visit the Siege Museum – where a diorama depicts Ladysmith and its surrounding hills at the time of the siege alongside a display of artefacts, documents, uniforms and firearms.

Travel via Dundee to your accommodation and enjoy dinner at the hotel.

Your guide will detail the Anglo Zulu War battle of Isandlwana, where 20, 000 Zulu warriors wiped out almost an entire British regiment and their firepower within just a few hours.

You’ll then visit Rorke's Drift – where British soldiers, outnumbered 35 to 1 – fought off 4,000 Zulus for 12 hours. You’ll then return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
