Overview

Immerse yourself in a wealth of captivating culture and spectacular scenery as you experience the diverse highlights of northern Thailand and the Golden Triangle – the point where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos meet and the Mekong and Ruak rivers merge.

From the stunning city of Chiang Mai to the peaceful rural backwaters, this packed five-day discovery will show you northern Thailand at its most authentic. You’ll come face to face with hilltribes in their tucked-away villages, meander through bustling markets, and help to feed and wash elephants at a sanctuary. But you’ll also find yourself with time to reflect, as you cruise down rivers and soak up the tranquil atmosphere at ornate sacred temples.

With days packed full of experiences that invigorate your senses – against a backdrop of misty mountains and vivid green tea fields – your exploration of this extraordinary region is sure to leave you with life-long memories.

Day 1

Chiang Rai – Golden Triangle

Your adventure begins in Chiang Rai, where you'll hit the road for sleepy Chiang Saen – Thailand’s oldest town – stopping at a Karen hilltribe village and hot springs along the way.

After lunch, you’ll visit Wat Phra That Chom Kitti – the remains of an ancient temple with impressive views across the Mekong River – before boarding a long-tailed speedboat for a ride to the Golden Triangle – the point where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos meet.

Day 2

Golden Triangle – Chiang Rai

Today you’ll journey north to Mai Sae – situated on Thailand’s border with Myanmar. Here, you can visit a jade-cutting factory, buy souvenirs at the colourful open-air market, and explore Wat Tham Pla – known as the fish or monkey cave temple.

You’ll continue towards Doi Mae Salong – a charming village perched in the back hills with a unique atmosphere and character, owing to its dominant Chinese community. Here, you can again encounter hilltribes, such as the Akha, Yao and Lisu, before settling in Chiang Rai for the night.

Kok River - Hilltribe Country

Today you’ll take an early morning cruise on a long-tailed boat that will navigate rivers through verdant jungle, passing villages of bamboo huts that are home to hilltribes. You’ll have the chance to explore the Lahu and Ban Pha Tai villages before having lunch at the Maekok River Village Resort with exceptional views of the river, valley and distant hills.

You’ll continue onwards, by road, to the scenic valley of Mae Rim for an overnight stay in a Meo-style bungalow at the Hmong Hilltribe Lodge. This evening you’ll enjoy a special barbecue around a camp fire, followed by dancing performed by a group of hilltribe villagers from the neighbouring settlement of Mae Khi.

Day 4

Hilltribe Country – Chiang Mai

Today you’ll head away from Hilltribe Country, for the chance to see majestic elephants, up close, at the Thai Elephant Care Center. This small rescue centre enables you to learn all about these magnificent animals while they play, bathe and eat and you can even help with feeding and washing them.

After visiting the elephants you’ll make a stop at an orchid farm to walk among exotic blooms. On arrival in Chiang Mai you’ll enjoy a traditional Khantoke dinner and dance performance – showcasing Northern Thailand’s ancient Lanna culture – for a truly unforgettable last night.
