Discover what makes New Zealand so special on this 19-day tour across the country’s North and South Islands. Showcasing the very best of New Zealand’s staggering scenery, the tour will take you to beautiful beaches, geothermal valleys, world-renowned wine regions, great lakes, epic glaciers, and stunning fjords.

Incorporating four cruises, a rail journey and a host of included activities, this is sure to be the trip of a lifetime – but it’s also an easy-peasy way to explore “The Land of the Long White Cloud”. Day 1

Arrive in Auckland

Kia Ora, and welcome to New Zealand. At Auckland Airport, you’ll meet your tour representative and be transferred to your hotel in the heart of the city centre. You can spend the rest of the day exploring Auckland at your leisure, before meeting your fellow travellers for dinner.

Day 2

Auckland – Bay of Islands

Leave Auckland and travel to the Parry Kauri Park, where you can see a magnificent example of a Kauri tree and stroll through native bush. You’ll also visit the Kauri Museum in Matakohe, before arriving in the town of Paihia in the heart of the beautiful Bay of Islands. Enjoy a guided tour around the nearby Waitangi Treaty Grounds – where New Zealand’s founding document was signed by Maori chiefs and the British Crown in 1840 – and learn more about Maori culture and history.

Day 3

Bay of Islands

Today is a free day, allowing you to explore the beautiful Bay of Islands at your leisure. You could enjoy a scenic coastal walk, before feasting on some of region’s best seafood at one of the many restaurants and cafés. Or you could opt to take a day trip to the very northern tip of New Zealand, Cape Reinga, and see the sprawling Ninety Mile Beach.

Day 4

Bay of Islands – Auckland

Hop aboard a luxury catamaran for a morning cruise through the beautiful Bay of Islands. You’ll sail to Cape Brett where you can see a historic lighthouse and the ‘Hole in the Rock’ – an iconic natural landmark which you can sail through. Be sure to keep an eye out of dolphins and other marine life during your cruise, too. You’ll return to Auckland by early evening.

Day 5

Auckland – Rotorua

Enjoy a morning sightseeing tour of Auckland and pay a visit to the Sky Tower. New Zealand’s tallest building is unmistakable along the city’s skyline, but it’s the views from the top which make it special. There are views in every direction and, on a clear day, you can see up to 80 kilometres away. Next, you’ll leave Auckland and travel through picturesque countryside towards the Hobbiton™. Enjoy a buffet lunch followed by a guided tour of the magical movie set used in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. You can find out how this piece of farmland was transformed into The Shire, peak your head around Hobbit Holes, and enjoy a drink in the Green Dragon.

Day 6

Rotorua

Get ready for an action packed day in Rotorua. You’ll start off with a gondola ride and breakfast with a spectacular view at Skyline Rotorua. There’s even time for a thrilling luge ride, if you’re feeling up to it. Next up, you’ll head to the Agrodome for a unique New Zealand farming experience, including a sheep shearing presentation, a visit to a woollen mill, and a taste of delicious kiwifruit juice and Manuka honey.

Later, you’ll visit Te Puia to see bubbling mud pools and the largest active geyser in the Southern Hemisphere. Finish your day with an evening of entertainment including a Hangi – a traditional Maori feast cooked in a pit oven in the ground – and a concert.

Day 7

Rotorua – Napier – Masterton

Leave Rotorua behind and travel along the Thermal Explorer Highway to Taupo, where you’ll see the mighty Huka Falls and Lake Taupo. Then you’ll continue on to Napier. Known as ‘The Art Deco Capital’, this city boasts an impressive collection of stylish buildings – you’ll be able to see the best ones on a city tour, while learning about its history. You’ll have some free time to stroll along the seafront or grab a bite to eat in a local café, before travelling through Wairarapa – an emerging cool-climate wine region – and reaching Masterton, where you’ll stay the night.

Day 8

Masterton – Greytown – Wellington

Enjoy a relaxed morning before travelling to historical Greytown, which is home to some incredible colonial architecture and New Zealand's most complete street of wooden Victorian buildings. Next, you’ll drive through the scenic Rimutaka Mountain Range before reaching the country’s vibrant capital, Wellington. Familiarise yourself with a city tour, as you take in the sights of the waterfront, stroll down cool Cuba Street, and discover the historical and cultural attractions.

Day 9

Wellington – Picton – Blenheim

This morning, you’ll visit New Zealand’s national museum, Te Papa, and see the groundbreaking Gallipoli: A Scale of War exhibition. In the afternoon, it’s time to say farewell to the North Island, as you board the Interislander ferry and sail across the Cook Straight. You’ll be able to admire the incredible sight of the Marlborough Sounds, before reaching Picton on the South Island. Back on the coach, you’ll travel to Blenheim in the heart of the Marlborough – a wine region known the world over for its sauvignon blanc.

Day 10

Blenheim – Kaikoura - Christchurch

Today you’ll board the TranzAlpine train for one of the world’s great rail journeys. From Greymouth, you’ll travel over viaducts, river valleys and stunning gorges – all flanked by the imposing the Southern Alps – to reach the cool little town of Hokitika. Then you’ll take the coach to Franz Josef, which is famous for its imposing and spectacular glacier. If you wish to get up close to the glacier face, you’ll have the option to take a scenic flight, weather permitting.

Day 11

Christchurch – Arthurs Pass – Franz Josef

Day 12

Franz Josef – Queenstown

Get ready to see some of New Zealand’s best scenery. Departing Franz Josef, you’ll journey south down the beautiful West Coast, taking in the snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps. Snaking through Haast Pass and skirting the tranquil shores of lakes Wanaka and Hawea, you’ll arrive in picturesque Queenstown. This place is in a fantastic location on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, with views of The Remarkables’s jagged peaks. Spend the evening at your leisure – you’ll be spoiled for choice by Queenstown’s impressive restaurants.

Day 13

Queenstown

How you spend your day in Queenstown is entirely up to you. New Zealand’s self-proclaimed adrenaline capital has many thrilling activities on offer, including bungee-jumping, skydiving and jet-boating. You could visit some filming sites from The Lord of the Rings, hire bikes and cycle around the lake, or take a gondola ride to the top of Bob’s Peak.

In the evening, you’ll board a vintage steamship, TSS Earnslaw, and cruise across Lake Wakatipu to Walter Peak Station, where you can feast on a gourmet barbecue dinner.

Day 14

Queenstown – Te Anau

After a leisurely morning, you’ll travel to Arrowtown – an old gold mining village with a fascinating history and a modern array of cafés and boutiques. You’ll then continue to Te Anau. This scenic lakefront town is the gateway to Fiordland National Park. But it also has a wonderful attraction of its own – why not opt to visit the magical Te Anau Glowworm caves while you’re there?

Day 15

Te Anau – Milford Sound – Te Anau

The road into Fiordland National Park is one of the most spectacular drives of the tour – but even that won’t quite prepare you for the magnificence of Milford Sound. You’ll be able to enjoy a cruise around this pristine fiord, during which you can admire the surrounding waterfalls, mountains and the iconic Mitre Peak. In the afternoon, you’ll return to Te Anau where you can spend the rest of the day however you wish.

Day 16

Te Anau – Dunedin

Travel through Gore and Balclutha towards Dunedin, known as the “Edinburgh of the South”. You can explore this vibrant city, then travel along the Otago Peninsula to Larnach Castle where you’ll learn about its tragic and scandalous history on a guided tour. Afterwards, you can stroll around the gardens and enjoy a delicious afternoon tea.

Day 17

Dunedin – Mt Cook – Twizel

It’s time to bid farewell to Dunedin and head north. You’ll see the unusual Moeraki Boulders on the way, and make a stop in Oamaru to admire some of New Zealand’s finest 19th-century architecture. Following the Waitaki River, you’ll pass Lake Benmore and witness the imposing sight of Mt Cook – New Zealand’s highest peak. If the weather allows, you can opt to take a scenic flight over the soaring Southern Alps, before reaching Twizel for the night.

Day 18

Twizel – Christchurch

Today you’ll travel to Lake Tekapo – a stunning beauty spot renowned for its milky turquoise waters. You can go for a scenic stroll, admire the incredible views, and visit the tiny Church of the Good Shepherd. You’ll arrive back to Christchurch, where you can enjoy a farewell dinner with your fellow travellers.
