Overview

This Tasmanian trip is a great introduction to the island state and gives you a real insight into the rich convict history and shows off the spectacular and diverse landscape. You’ll be taken to unforgettable locations which will create lasting memories, including a stop at Port Arthur, a visit to the beautiful Russell Falls and Australia's deepest lake- Lake St Clair. 

 

You'll even see the famous Wineglass Bay in Freycinet National Park. Tasmania is a remarkable destination and offers a very different experience to anywhere else in Australia, making this a state not to be missed. 

Day 1

Arrive Hobart

Your time in Tasmania begins with an afternoon tour of Hobart. See the historic Battery Point, Salamanca Place, the Botanic Gardens, Constitution Dock; the destination of yachts from the Sydney to Hobart race, and Mt Nelson which grants panoramic views over Australia's southernmost city. Enjoy a welcome reception and dinner with your Travel Director and fellow travellers this evening.

Day 2

Hobart - Strahan

Head west into the Mt. Field National Park, walk through lush rainforest to the spectacular three-tiered Russell Falls. Journey on to Lake St. Clair, the deepest freshwater lake in Australia and continue through the rainforest to the coastal town of Strahan, the gateway to the World Heritage listed Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park.

Day 3

Strahan

Board your cruise along the Gordon River, there's no doubt that you’ll be awestruck by the dark waters which are stained amber by button-grass tannins. Next, stop at Sarah Island for an insight into the lesser-known convict history at the Macquarie Harbour Penal Settlement. You'll see Hells Gates, the treacherous entrance to the harbour, and Heritage Landing, a site of 500-year-old Huon Pine trees. Step back on dry land for a theatrical performance of 'The Ship That Never Was', a true and comical story of the Great Escape from Sarah Island.

Day 4

Strahan-Cradle Mountain-Burnie

This morning, marvel at the inspiring beauty of Cradle Mountain National Park. Join your Travel Director for a guided walk by Dove Lake, you may even spot Bennetts wallabies, echidnas and pademelons along the way. But lets not forget Tasmania's most infamous resident, the Tasmanian Devil, who calls the rugged wilderness of Cradle Mountain its home. This afternoon, a MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience awaits as you are given a sneak peek into the workings of Devils @ Cradle by one of the experienced keepers. As well as showing you around the sanctuary, they will also give you an insight into how they support conservation efforts of this threatened species.

Day 5

Burnie - Launceston

Take a scenic drive to the top of Table Cape, and at 180 metres high the views over Tasmania's coastline are are nothing short of spectacular. Travel through Penguin, a town which has embraced its name with the installation of penguin sculptures, before journeying along the north coast, passing through Ulverstone and Sheffield. By now you many be feeling a little peckish! Pick up some delicious dairy delights at Ashgrove Tasmanian Farm, their award-winning cheeses cannot be missed!

Day 6

Launceston

Start the day with a visit to the unique natural formation of the Cataract Gorge, home to the longest single-span chairlift in the world, afterwards orientate yourself with your surrounds on a city tour. This afternoon the choice is yours, hop on the scenic chairlift and glide over the water to lofty lookout, or sip on wines during a tour of Tamar Valley Winery.

Day 7

Launceston - Bicheno

Today's first stop is Bridestowe Lavender Estate, producer of high quality lavender since 1922 afterwards is a quick stop at the Legerwood Carved Memorial Trees site. Then follow the picturesque east coast to Bicheno where you'll have time to take an optional experience tour to see Bicheno’s wild penguins as they emerge from the ocean afterdark(seasonal).

Day 8

Bicheno - Hobart

Your first activity today is a guided walk where you'll experience the grandeur of Freycinet National Park. Walk to the lookout at Cape Tourville that affords astonishing views across brilliant blue water, verdant forest and golden beaches. Be amazed by the towering pink granite cliffs and enjoy incredible views of Wineglass bay.  Carry on to Hobart, travelling through Richmond, a village is famous for its elegant Georgian architecture and home to galleries, tea shops, craft boutiques and museums.

Day 9

Port Arthur

Explore Australia's best-preserved convict site today as you head to Port Arthur. You'll stroll through this once feared convict settlement as well as seeing notable attractions such as the Isle of the Dead and Devil's Kitchen. There will be time for you to wander the site at your leisure.  This evening enjoy a farewell dinner with your Travel Director and fellow travellers at one of Hobart’s popular restaurants.
