As the name suggests, Villas at Stonehaven is an all-villa resort. So you’re guaranteed a private pad, complete with a whole bunch of home comforts. Designed by Swedish architect Arne Hasselqvist – famed for designing many celebrity homes in the Caribbean and, in particular, for shaping the overall aesthetic of Mustique – they reference the former French occupation of Tobago and channel the old-fashioned glamour of a traditional manor house.
Ranging in size from one bedroom to four bedrooms, all 14 villas incorporate carefully chosen materials like greenheart hardwoods from Guyana, oil-rubbed bronze hardware from Peru, granite and marble countertops from Brazil and floor tiles from Italy. What’s more, each one has its own infinity pool, private gardens and housekeepers will prepare breakfast for you every morning – so you need never lift a finger.
Villas at Stonehaven is designed to be peaceful, so there’s not much in the way of onsite entertainment – but there are lots of exciting things going on nearby. Right next door, you’ll find the Grafton Caledonian Wildlife Sanctuary – a lush, 60-acre expanse that’s home to hundreds of tropical birds. Then, a short drive away, there are tennis courts and two 18-hole championship golf courses – so sporty types are particularly well catered for. And if you’re something of a water baby, you can book a boat trip and try your hand at catching marlin and yellowfin tuna or, come nightfall, paddleboard or kayak through bioluminescent plankton. Diving and snorkelling excursions can also be arranged, giving you the chance to get up close and personal with colourful corals and fascinating marine life.
Villas at Stonehaven enjoys a fantastic hilltop location on the southeast side of Tobago – and its elevated position means panoramic ocean vistas are guaranteed from your private villa, as well as most public areas of the resort. But it’s also just a short stroll down to the shore. A 15-minute walk – or a three-minute drive – will bring you to the beach at Stonehaven Bay. The golden sands are dotted with palm trees and brushed by beautiful azure waters. There are also a couple of restaurants at the eastern end – and it’s one of the few destinations in Tobago where leatherback turtles nest between the months of March and June. But Stonehaven Bay isn’t the only beach in the vicinity. Make your way along the coast, in either direction, and you’ll find several other sandy stretches to choose from.
Open from 7am until 10pm every day except Monday, The Pavilion has a beautiful terrace, so you can dine al fresco while overlooking the tropical gardens and distant seashore.
Whether you’re in the mood for coffee, a refreshing cocktail or a light lunch, The Clubhouse is the place to go. You can mingle with other guests any time from 10am to 10pm, and if you stop by between 3-5pm any day except Monday, you can enjoy teatime – complete with freshly baked cookies.
All 14 villas at this luxury resort are beautifully furnished in a modern yet homely style, with French Colonial touches – so they feel at once spacious and cosy. Besides large, air-conditioned bedrooms, all villas feature indoor and outdoor dining and living areas, fully equipped kitchens and their own private infinity pool – complete with ocean views.
