Uga Ulagalla is concealed in a 58-acre tropical garden overflowing with exotic trees and plants. The resort has a relaxed atmosphere, encouraging poolside lounging, gentle cycle rides and plenty of spa treatments. With an Olympic-sized outdoor swimming pool at its centre, as well as a historic mansion surrounded by rustic villas, it’s the perfect place for a private getaway. But you’ll also be near some of Sri Lanka’s top attractions. Located just north of the centre of Sri Lanka, Uga Ulagalla is close to the city of Anuradhapura and its archaeological sites. Plus, it’s just an hour away from the rock fortress of Sigiriya, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
As Uga Ulagalla is in the middle of the area’s Cultural Triangle, there’s a wealth of things to experience. The hotel can arrange tours and excursions, including a visit to Ritigala Sanctuary where you can sink into the stone bathing pools, while monkeys and tropical birds look on. Safari fans can choose from two nearby National Parks – Wilpattu and Minneriya. At Wilpattu, bears and leopards rule the roost, while Minneriya is famous for its 400-strong herds of elephants. Meanwhile, a scuba trip to Batticaloa is perfect for divers who want to see WWII wrecks and teeming coral reefs.
If you can’t tear yourself away from Uga Ulagalla, there’s plenty to do within the resort itself. A 60-minute nature walk of the grounds takes you to the Wannemaduwa Tank – a traditional irrigation reservoir where you can spy flocks of native birdlife. Foodies can get their fill thanks to the garden tour and cookery demonstration, where you’ll make lunch from freshly picked ingredients. There’s also the chance to take part in archery, kite-making classes, and guided horseback or bicycle tours.
This calming wooden dining room has a friendly ambience that matches perfectly with the fusion of Sri Lankan, Eastern and Western meals served at Liyawela.
Choose your setting from deep in the paddy field, by the side of the pool or on your private deck. Whatever you pick, you can dine on traditional fare under the stars.
This lovely spot is set in a pavilion in the middle of the paddy fields. The menu features traditional dishes, all made from ingredients picked from the rice fields and local area.
The villas at Ulagalla are dotted around the extensive garden, each one secluded from its neighbours by lush foliage. The interiors are pure luxury, with four-poster beds, dark wood accents and modern furnishings. Spend time relaxing on your wooden deck and look out over your view, whether that’s of the vivid paddy fields, the nearby jungle or the peaceful lake.
