Hotel Overview

Lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and buffalo. Those are the African ‘Big Five’ animals and they all roam in the Pumba Private Game Reserve. Also living on the 6,500-hectare malaria-free park are more than 300 bird species and at least 30 other mammals including cheetahs, hyenas, hippos, giraffes, porcupines, wildebeest, and mongooses. With dawn and dusk safari drives led by expert rangers, you have an excellent chance to find them all. Walking safaris plus specialist guided bird watching and photography excursions are also available for those looking for alternate wildlife experiences.

Driving through the Eastern Cape savanna in search of its magnificent wildlife is the top activity at Pumba Bush Lodge, but it’s far from the only one. Guided bush walks allow you to learn the secrets of tracking as you appreciate the subtleties of the environment often missed on faster game drives. Nocturnal safaris give you a chance to see creatures who operate on a different schedule. You can also try bass fishing on Lake Cariega, practice archery under the watchful eye of a field guide, or visit the local community of Seven Fountains, where many of the Pumba Lodge staff have their homes. Treatments at Soul Spa are perfect for afternoon pampering while the clear night skies make stargazing a mesmerising experience.

Community, education, and conservation are all part of the Pumba ethos and are reflected in a host of activities both at the lodge and behind the scenes. Through the Pumba Foundation, started in 2004, the lodge is dedicated to providing youth education, workshops helping people develop valuable life skills, and opportunities for local entrepreneurs. Sporting and active lifestyle programs are supported alongside initiatives to clear invasive plant species and promote healthy biodiversity within the park. Sustainable resources and amenities are used throughout the lodge without compromising on the luxury and comfort offered to guests.
