Eastern & Oriental Penang sits on the historical coastline of George Town, Penang’s capital. At this beautiful hotel, you’ll find colonial-era opulence alongside all the modern touches you’d expect at a resort as luxurious as this one. And the original Heritage Wing was extensively refurbished in December 2019, using a sophisticated neutral palette and Malay-inspired patterns to bring together two very different styles. Contemporary features like an infinity pool, Nespresso® machines and rainfall showers give a modern twist to this charming hotel, which has been one of Penang’s finest for more than 135 years.
George Town’s Chinese and Indian history can still be seen across the area, and Eastern & Oriental Penang is the ideal base from which to explore. A 15-minute walk takes you to Fort Cornwallis, where you can see remnants of Penang Island’s past defence system, then head five minutes further south to Chew Jetty – a collection of six 19th-century jetties developed by Chinese settlers. Or stroll through the centre of the town to see historical houses and buildings, still standing strong.
There’s plenty to do at Eastern & Oriental Penang. Shake off the jet lag with an aromatherapy massage, inspired by Japanese shiatsu or Balinese techniques. Go for a cooling dip in the resort’s two pools, or put your feet up poolside with a cocktail in hand. You can even indulge in a bit of retail therapy. Visit Monica Quen’s boutique to find international pieces, or pick up a few reminders of your stay from the Emporium gift shop.
Take a seat at the oak and brass bar, or sink into one of the leather sofas with a specially blended drink. Farquhar’s Bar is the perfect spot to unwind and look out across the waterfront.
This sea-view lounge serves food from across the world, so you can tuck into your favourite dishes all day long. On Sunday, there’s even a classic British roast dinner on offer.
Take a seat under Java Tree’s chandeliers and dine on traditional Straits-Nyonya dishes – historical favourites from China and Malaysia – or European flavours with a glass of fine wine in hand.
If you’ve worked up a big appetite, head to Sarkies anytime you fancy for a buffet of Malaysian and international delights. It’s a laidback spot for filling up on tasty treats.
A fusion of Indian, Chinese and Malaysian flavours are served up at Palm Court, as well as familiar Western dishes. Celebrating something special? Tuck into to a three-tiered English-inspired afternoon tea.
This private lounge is a relaxing place to enjoy breakfast or evening cocktails, reserved exclusively for Heritage Wing and Corner Suite guests.
Eastern & Oriental Penang’s original Heritage Wing has 100 suites, all of which were fully refurbished in December 2019. So, while the façade retains its original Moorish charm, you’ll discover bright, stylish suites inside that bring Eastern and Western luxe together in the best way. Or, if you’d prefer to stay somewhere with a contemporary feel, choose from 132 suites in the thoroughly modern Victory Annexe.
