Governors’ Camp is perfectly placed at the edge of Masai Mara National Reserve – it was built in 1972 and was one of Africa’s first tented camps. It was reserved for the Governors of Kenya during the country’s colonial years, which earned the camp its title. Even though more modern facilities have been added over the years, like Wi-Fi and hot water, you’ll still feel like someone very important during an exclusive stay here.
Couples, friends and families are all welcome at Governors’ Camp, as the spacious safari tents can be set up to suit any group. If you’re taking the kids along, opt for one of the family tents and head out on a game drive in search of the ‘Big Five’. Or, if you’re looking for a trip for two, the Governors’ Camps tents offer a private retreat. After a game drive, why not relax on your veranda and listen to the birds and insects around you, and lions roaring in the distance?
Given the long-standing history of Governors’ Camp, this place does everything it can to keep the areas as unspoilt as possible. You’re encouraged to bring your own reusable water bottle to refill at the filtered water stations across the camp. And you’ll be given a whole range of Cinnabar Green toiletries to use during your stay – they’re made in Kenya and use natural ingredients to have as little impact on the environment as possible. As a result of their efforts, Governors’ Camp has earned a Silver Eco Rating from Kenya’s Eco Tourism board.
Enjoy a full English or continental breakfast at this chilled-out dining area, before heading out on a morning game drive. And, at lunch time, you can fill up at the varied buffet.
In the evening, dine al fresco and admire the Masai plains as you tuck into delicious à la carte dishes. Why not enjoy a pre-dinner tipple or nightcap in the bar tent afterwards?
Picnics and packed lunches are available to take on your game drive. Or, for something special, you could request a unique dining experience in the bush.
The 37 tents at Governors’ Camp overlook either the Mara River or the vast plains of the Masai Mara National Reserve. Each tent is bright and spacious, with homely touches – like a modern bathroom and electric plugs – to make your stay easy and relaxing. The net windows allow you to keep an eye on local birdlife, or you could sit on your private veranda to watch wildlife drinking from the river.
