Where should you go in October?

While it may not be traditional holiday season, October is a great time to travel. You’ll be able to avoid the summer crowds and get some much-needed sun in beautiful places around the world. Countless destinations offer the perfect autumn escape, with warm beaches and cool cocktails to help you forget the grey skies and drizzle at home. Book a romantic break to the picture-perfect isles of the Maldives, or opt for a scorching winter sun getaway to Abu Dhabi or Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Or you could head to South Africa for milder temperatures in the mid-twenties, allowing you to enjoy the beaches, vineyards and fantastic wildlife. And, of course, there’s the reliable Caribbean. This winter favourite serves up sunny skies and white sands – the perfect choice for an October beach holiday.

Hot Destinations in October

The Maldives

Made up of more than 1,000 islands, the Maldives is a much-loved destination – but its tropical postcode means that rain is common. In October, though, the southern atolls are much drier and have average temperatures of 29 degrees Celsius. In this tranquil corner of the globe, there are countless spots where you can unwind, snorkel and enjoy the sunshine. And, if you’re staying in a luxurious overwater bungalow, you can grab your snorkel and jump straight into the Indian Ocean, or simply soak up some rays on your balcony. For something a little more strenuous, go kayaking in search of tropical fish, or take a boat trip to one of the area’s world-class diving sites, where you can really explore the Maldives’ hidden depths.

The Middle East

If high-twenties isn’t hot enough for you, head to the United Arab Emirates for a sizzling holiday. It’s only a six-hour flight from the UK, but the UAE will feel like a whole other world, as you jet off and leave the autumn weather behind you. With average temperatures of 36 degrees Celsius throughout October, the Middle East was made for sun-worshippers. You could enjoy a beach break to Dubai, where you can also shop in town-sized malls, dine in gourmet restaurants, and go up the world’s tallest building – the Burj Khalifa. Or, opt for an October holiday in Abu Dhabi, where you’ll find grand mosques, ancient souks and desert dunes. For somewhere slightly off the beaten track, why not consider authentic Oman? Relatively untouched by tourism, this neck of the woods has retained a lot of its old-age charm.

South Africa

In October, South Africa enjoys pleasant spring temperatures around 24 degrees Celsius. You could explore Cape Town’s colourful streets and take a trip to the top of Table Mountain. Nearby, the Cape vineyards are the perfect place to sit in the sun and sample South Africa’s renowned wine. If you’re looking for beaches, drive along the celebrated Garden Route – which starts by Cape Town and runs east along the country’s southern coast – for beautiful sandy spots hidden among the rocks. If you want to see where the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean meet, stop off at Cape Point – the southernmost point of Africa. And, of course, no holiday to South Africa would be complete without going on safari. Take a game drive to get up close and personal with the country’s majestic wildlife, including lions, elephants, giraffes and more.

The Caribbean

A classic beach destination, the Caribbean continues to seduce holidaymakers looking for some winter sun. Thanks to October’s 30-degree sunshine, you can make the most of the sublime beaches across the region. Popular islands like Barbados and St Lucia come with stunning palm-fringed sands and turquoise waters – but each isle also has its own unique flavour and personality. For laidback living and ramshackle beach bars, it has to be Jamaica, while romantic St Lucia is perfect for couples. For cultural gems and pastel-coloured cities, Cuba wins every time. And, if you simply want to get comfy on a beach, Barbados has plenty to spare. In the Caribbean, you can do exactly what you like – wherever you choose for your October getaway, you can be sure of delicious food, gorgeous resorts and sunny skies.
