Where's Hot in May?

May often marks the point in the year when people try to get away, encouraged by the UK bank holidays. As summer temperatures start to ramp up around the world, it’s a great time to visit several popular holiday destinations. See famous sights in North America, beat the high-season crowds in Southeast Asia, or unwind on an idyllic island in the Indian Ocean.

Where should you go in May?

If you want a hot holiday before the summer rush, book your trip for May. As the northern hemisphere starts warming up, popular places across the USA and Asia hit the sweet spot of being warm, but not humid. In America, you can expect balmy temperatures in the twenties as you zoom around Florida’s rollercoasters or New York’s iconic landmarks. Alternatively, head to Southeast Asia before the summer crowds arrive, where you can discover Indonesia’s natural beauty, or visit the world-famous Angkor Wat temples in Cambodia. If you’re looking for an urban adventure, the exotic metropolises of Hong Kong and Singapore make for sophisticated spring getaways in May, or you could opt for the cooler Japanese cities of Tokyo and Osaka. Meanwhile, floating in the Indian Ocean, the sun-soaked islands of Sri Lanka, the Maldives and the Seychelles all offer exotic beach retreats.

Hot Destinations in May

USA

May is a great time to go on holiday to America. Temperatures won’t be quite as high as in summer, but that means you’ll have the chance to visit top tourist attractions before the season is in full swing. That means shorter queues and smaller crowds. On the warmer end of the spectrum, Las Vegas clocks in at 25 degrees Celsius during May – just right for enjoying the pool parties, strolling down The Strip, and taking a trip to the Grand Canyon. On the other side of the country, Florida and New York are just as warm in May. So you can make the most of Orlando’s big-name theme parks and Miami’s beaches before the summer holidays kick off. Or, work your way around the Big Apple, as you visit Fifth Avenue, the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty.

Southeast Asia

The weather in Southeast Asia is great in May but, since it’s just before high season, prices are more affordable – making it the ideal time to visit. A firm favourite with travellers, tropical Bali is at its best at this time of year. Soak up the 30-degree heat on the powdery sands, or cool down with a spot of snorkelling or scuba diving. Up-and-coming Lombok is another Indonesian option. With temperatures in the low thirties during May, this slightly hotter island offers a more relaxed holiday experience, thanks to its quiet beaches, lush jungles and dramatic mountains. If you’d prefer a cultural getaway, consider lesser-known Cambodia. The sprawling temple complex of Angkor Wat is an absolute must-see. It’s best to go there for sunrise – then you can spend the rest of your day relaxing in the 30-degree sunshine.

The Far East

If you want to experience the wonders of the Far East before the crowds arrive, May is the time to go. The futuristic cities of Hong Kong and Singapore – reaching 29 and 31 degrees respectively – are both great options for an exotic trip with a difference. Hong Kong’s popular Disneyland and Ocean Park draw travellers from across the globe, while Singapore is home to delicious restaurants and the iconic Gardens by the Bay. For a cooler city break, 21-degree Tokyo – one of the planet’s liveliest megacities – caters to all tastes. You can get a dose of culture at the Imperial Palace and the city’s museum, while attractions like Disneyland Tokyo Resort offer fun for all the family. Further south – and slightly warmer at 24 degrees – Osaka boasts everything from theme parks to ancient shrines.

Indian Ocean

Last but certainly not least, the Indian Ocean is a fantastic place to be during May. At this time of year, you’ll miss both the searing summer heat and the monsoon seasons. The postcard-like isles of the Maldives are a steady 30 degrees – the perfect temperature for snorkelling, dolphin watching and island hopping. The Seychelles offer the same temperatures and a similar laidback vibe, with the main attractions being the legendary white-sand beaches and the island tours. If you’d prefer to focus on one large island – rather than several small ones – Mauritius is another beautiful option. Although May is technically winter, temperatures remain in the high twenties. Or you could explore the east coast of Sri Lanka. While the rest of the country experiences monsoon season in May, the eastern beaches bask in 32-degree sunshine.
