Where should you go in February?

Winter’s clutches may dig deep at home in February, but there are still plenty of opportunities to enjoy some much-needed sunshine. Just by getting on a plane, you can leave the British winter behind and spend your days swimming in turquoise waters, under a sizzling sun. In February – the UK’s snowiest month of the year – Southeast Asia’s weather could hardly be better, with low humidity and warm temperatures. In Australia, meanwhile, February is the height of summer, so it’s a fabulous time to visit Sydney, Melbourne or the legendary surfers’ beaches on the Gold Coast. For an island escape, take a look at Mauritius or the Caribbean, where you can expect to find tropical jungles, breathtaking beaches and that all-important winter sun.

Hot Destinations in February

Southeast Asia

If you want to escape Britain’s cold mornings and gloomy evenings, Southeast Asia is the perfect destination. In February, daytime temperatures in Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia all float in the mid-to-low thirties, with warm evenings to match. February is also the last month of the region’s dry season, meaning minimal rainfall and low humidity. The Thai islands – including Phuket, Koh Samui and countless hidden gems – offer seemingly endless stretches of white sand and temperate blue waters, perfect for swimming and snorkelling. If you like your holidays to have a little more adventure, why not head into Thailand’s tropical rainforests? Surround yourself with exotic wildlife in the northern region of Chiang Mai, before returning to base for a bowl of authentic massaman curry. Or, for a beach break with rustic charm, check out the lantern-lit cities of Vietnam or temple-dotted Cambodia.

Australia

February – the height of summer in the southern hemisphere – is a great time to explore Australia. Temperatures in Sydney and Melbourne average 27 degrees, while Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef are even hotter. You can stroll along sweeping beaches, explore Melbourne’s street art-covered lanes, and see Sydney’s iconic Opera House. Spend the mild evenings – no cooler than 15 degrees – having a barbecue or relaxing on a rooftop bar. Beach lovers should head to the Gold Coast. Peppered with cute towns, this stretch of Oz is great for travellers who want to combine city and beach. Australia’s east coast is also famous for its excellent surfing. Byron Bay – one of the country’s top surf spots – offers rolling waves, chilled-out bars and laidback restaurants, while popular Bondi Beach is just a short bus ride from central Sydney.

The Caribbean

The Caribbean is a top holiday destination all year round but, with temperatures hovering in the high twenties, February is a great time to visit. This beautiful collection of islands offers postcard-like views, where white-sand beaches are lapped by turquoise waters. The weather in February is spot on for beach-based activities like snorkelling and swimming, but the days are also cool enough for exploring historic plantations and hidden villages. Barbados is a favourite for travellers seeking a sophisticated winter sun holiday, while romantic St Lucia is perfect for couples. Cuba, meanwhile, is a unique combination of old-world charm, colourful cities and magnificent beaches. If you spend a day or two in Havana, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time, as you’re surrounded by colonial buildings, classic cars and Hemmingway-haunted bars.

Mauritius

Anchored some 200 kilometres off the east coast of Africa, Mauritius is a winter sun destination like no other. In February, this tropical paradise sees daytime temperatures in the thirties, while evenings rarely fall below a balmy 25 degrees. Plus, at this time of year, the humidity is low and it barely rains. So you can see Mauritius’ famous natural beauty spots, including its cloud-brushing mountains, tumbling waterfalls and sugar-white sands. Spend your days engrossed in a good book on the beach, or take a boat trip in search of wild dolphins. If you want a glimpse into the island’s past, the capital of Port Louis is packed with colonial features, cathedrals and museums. Or, to get a feel for Mauritius’ wild side, head into the Moka Mountains, or take a 4x4 safari to see the exotic creatures which call this place home.
