Where should you go in August?

It’s no secret that August is one of the best months to escape the UK for sunnier climes. Destinations across the world bask in some of their best weather, with the USA and the Far East reaching sky-high temperatures. Soak up some serious sunshine in Las Vegas, ride Florida’s rollercoasters in 30-degree heat, or combine culture and city life in glittering Tokyo. But, if you want somewhere a little cooler, there are plenty of alternatives available. You could unwind on a Caribbean island, where the sea breeze will keep you feeling fresh, or head to Mexico for ancient ruins, knockout beaches and flavour-filled food.

The Caribbean

You might be surprised to see the Caribbean on our lists of August holiday destinations. After all, doesn’t August fall in hurricane season? This is true – but it’s also true that some islands are safely tucked out of harm’s way. The stunning island of Barbados, for instance, lies just outside of the main hurricane path – so you can relax on the white-sand beaches, snorkel in the surrounding coral reefs, and make the most of the 31-degree sunshine. Alternatively, head to the Dominican Republic, where you’ll find a variety of water sports, delicious dishes and luxury resorts. Or you could book a trip to Tobago in August. With long sandy beaches and rich rainforests, this small-but-mighty Caribbean gem lets you combine adventure with relaxation into one brilliant holiday.

In Mexico, the weather in August offers a balance – whether you want sizzling heat or something a little more temperate, this tropical hotspot has got it covered. Cancun is the premier beach destination, where temperatures soar to 33 degrees Celsius on a daily basis. While the beaches of Cancun are undoubtedly the main draw, there are plenty of other attractions to enjoy in the summer sun. You can go inland to the pools of Ik Kil for swimming and caving, and take a day trip to the historic Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza. For somewhere a little cooler, why not spend a few days in Mexico City? This sprawling urban jungle is much cooler than the coast, with August temperatures hovering in the early twenties. And it’s bursting with fascinating historical sights, not to mention delicious food and plenty of authentic tequila.

By August, summer is in full swing across the United States. In the Sunshine State – which really lives up to its name at this time of year – Orlando enjoys daily temperatures in the thirties. It’s the perfect weather for splashing about in the water parks, and zooming along on rollercoasters in the world-famous theme parks. For some beach time, you could head down the coast to Miami. Or head north to New York for sightseeing and shopping sprees. Over in the Nevada Desert, meanwhile, Las Vegas reaches 39 degrees Celsius in August – so if you really want to feel the heat, this is the place to go. It’s the perfect time to make the most of Sin City’s daily pool parties, and you can always cool down in the air-conditioned casinos, theatres and hotels.

The Far East

August sees peak temperatures in the Far East, with the mercury regularly reaching 35 degrees in cities like Tokyo and Beijing. A trip to Japan gives you everything from undulating mountains to action-packed megacities. You can tuck into delicious sushi, visit quiet temples and discover this island nation’s fascinating history. Hong Kong is another of Asia’s holiday spots for August. The skyline is dominated by skyscrapers but, in the maze of small side streets, Cantonese culture is alive and kicking. The views from Victoria Peak are a must-see, but it’s best to take the funicular railway in August, when Hong Kong temperatures hover in the thirties. Meanwhile, the bustling cities of Beijing and Shanghai are the gateways to remarkable sights like the Forbidden City, the Great Wall of China and the Lama Temple.
