Holidays in Santa Monica

Surrounded by Los Angeles on three sides and the Pacific Ocean on one, SaMo is one cool cat. On a Santa Monica holiday you can surf the morning swell and afterwards stand your board up to dry whilst you take coffee and soak up the beach town vibes. Continue your outdoor recreation throughout the day SaMo style with a skateboard and roll on by power walkers, barefoot dudes and crystal healers. Stop to splurge in bijou shops for interior design bits and bohemian jewellery and take refreshment in top drawer restaurants next to hung-over Hollywood party attendees (the Santa Monica restaurant scene is among the best in the USA and the world). Ditch the skateboard for a mountain bike and take a day trip to the cliffs and canyons of Topanga State Park or Angeles National Forest where wildfires blaze. Cap your Santa Monica holiday off where you started, with a beach sunset, a White Russian (Lebowski style) and watch pelicans glide just above the water surface.

Essential Information

West Pacific Beach Culture

A tour of Santa Monica’s beaches will give you the measure of the place. From the Ferris Wheel and fairground built back in 1909 when it was still working class holiday playground to the show offs that flex and pose on Muscle Beach. You’re likely to see surfing neophytes and hardy old hands emerging from the waves in deep surf discussion off Bay Street and a small patch of silence amongst frowns and puzzled expressions in Chess Park. Santa Monica’s residents live life down in the fresh Pacific air so join them and when thirst or hunger beckon, take to the bohemian cafes of Venice Beach where boarders weave between street performers and joggers on the Venice Boardwalk.

Iconoclast Shopping

Browse Venice Boardwalks cluster of boutiques that feel more like show rooms than shop floors, Montana Avenue’s ahead of the curve fashion stores or go for timeless luxury purchases in the likes of Tiffany & Co and Bloomingdale’s along Santa Monica Place. The arrangement of shops, clustered together according to style or social denomination, can ironically feel like the institutional denominations that bohemianism so loathes. Try heading out of the centre to Wilshire Boulevard for a weirder and in that way more Los Angelean shopping experience. Alternatively, Main Street offers a variety as well as a Farmers Market and ample opportunity to observe surfers gearing up for the waves, locals walking their dog and other rigmaroles of Californian life.

Street Art

Legions of creatives call Santa Monica home. Fashion designers, script writers, architects, musicians and thespians – you name it. With surrounding Californian natural beauty for inspiration, easy access to the big brother Los Angeles and well established artistic institutions like the Bergamot Station Arts Center, n Santa Monica’s art scene is non-stop. You can enjoy plenty of it without spending a dime although don’t think that makes it cheap – some of the street graffiti is so iconic it’s probably priceless. Check out the Buckshot Gallery for pieces you can take home. The best part of The Pier is surely the musicians, dancers, puppeteers and actors that perform from designated podiums and are restricted in their performances in that they canoot be ‘mass produced’ or of ‘produced with limited variation’. For independently minded Californians, this can only be a good thing.

Best Time to Travel

Santa Monica has a coastal Mediterranean climate. Summer is peak season when crowds are thick and the beaches busier than the rest of the year; the exception is the ‘June Gloom’ so called because of the Pacific fogs that smother the city. If sun and beach are on your agenda, better to hold off for the first week of July. For cheaper flights and hotels, prices start to drop in autumn (late September – early November). Santa Monica weather is consistent unless a cold one blows in from Alaska or a hot front from the east which can make temperatures shoot up.
