King of the Hill. Top of the Heap. A Number One

The city that never sleeps started as Dutch founded New Amsterdam in the 17th century. A wall was constructed and the adjacent sidewalk was naturally sign posted ‘Wall Street’. Downtown New York nowadays is an exchange of cultures and ideas as much as it is stocks and shares. People here think fast and talk fast. It’s the talent capital of the world from actors making their way in Broadway backstreets to blues-blaring saxophonists in sweaty subway stations. Short breaks to New York are well spent in the hip flea markets of Brooklyn’s Williamsburg one day and the high street designer outlets of Manhattan the next. Grab a NYC ‘slice’ or sample samples in the Chelsea Market and marvel at the Natural History Museums planetarium. Schedule a sunset walk under the eaves of the Brooklyn Bridge and pick out the Empire State and the Chrysler Tower in bars with skyline views.

Manhattan: the apple of New York’s eye. Tourists come for the Empire State Building, Times Square, the 9/11 Memorial, and the cluster of Midtown attractions. This is the New York of the silver screen, the haunts of movie stars and celebrities. If you’re basing yourself here, check out the heavyweights on Travelbag’s New York hotel portfolio that includes the likes of the JW Marriott Essex House on Fifth Avenue – expect upscale accommodation with art deco motifs and suites overlooking Central Park. Or how about the high ceilinged rooms of Gansevoort Park Avenue over on East 29? On the other side of Madison Square Park, over the cobblestones of the historical Meatpacking District, is the Gansevoort Meatpacking Hotel, where you'll find chic designs and bay windows with views of the Hudson River.

Sightseeing in New York

Holidays in New York summertime are the best in terms of things to do. Bartenders resume rooftop service and ferries intensify their schedules to old school weekend destinations like Coney and Governor’s Island. The cities artistic and cultural institutions go alfresco too; movies are screened in outdoor pop up locations, Broadway’s summer calendar kicks into gear and museums pour exhibitions onto the streets. For contemporary art collections, hit the Whitney Museum in the Meatpacking District, right next to the High Line – a retired rail line turned into a park. Winter is best for ice skating in Central Park and admiring the Christmas decorations around the city. Journeying out to Ellis Island to learn of the cities origins is a must. Arrange a hop on/hop off tour of New York, including Statue of Liberty tickets, with one of Travelbag’s Gray Line city sightseeing tours.

Shopping in New York

Retail therapy roots here run deep. Visit veteran department stores like Lord & Taylor, Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s – high street dynasties whose doors have been open since the 19th century. Browse the shop floors of high end fashion outlets along the mile and a half stretch of Madison Avenue. Italian standards dominate when you’re ‘Doing Madison’; fine Italian jewellers like Damiani Beautique and the classic and timeless fashion of Emporio Armani. Head to the boutiques of Soho where interior décor outlets and quirky stores operate behind cast iron fronted buildings. Interspersed are galleries and cafes to mull over the days purchases in or decide you have no regrets between drink in one of the trendy cocktail bars. December is best for New York shopping as you can save on accommodation and flights. Plus stores are decked out with Christmas trees, baubles and lights.

Best Time to Visit New York

In summer, temperatures regularly reach 30 degrees Celsius. To see the city in its summer prime, tie in your New York break with Independence Day in July or ‘movies in the park’ season in August. The humidity at this time of year can be tough, though, so peak summer is best avoided if you're not good with heat.

Spring and autumn are just as action-packed as summer, with St Patrick’s Day parade in March and Oktoberfest from September. Alternatively, a winter break to New York a is great option if you're travelling on a budget – as long as you avoid Thanksgiving and Christmas. Temperatures may well be below zero, but this city has a certain romance in the winter, especially when it snows. Plus, New York hotel deals are more common in November, January and February, as are cheap flights to New York.
