Nevada Holidays

A holiday in Nevada conjures images of money lost at casinos and stag party antics, maybe the occasional Burning Man anecdote. Whilst Vegas and Black Rock City are elemental to the Nevada experience, they can be a red herring to a world of stirring natural beauty. Add the Mojave Desert and Lake Tahoe to your holiday itinerary and cash in on the Nevada jackpot in full.

Holidays in Nevada

Nevada is obsessed with money – from dusty gold and silver mines and train heists of the pioneering past to the gambling capital of the world it has become today. Vegas is the manifestation of this feat of conjuring something out of nothing – from picking gold in the middle of nowhere to putting your quarter in the slot to receive thousands back. It's not all dice and flashing bright lights though. The Nevadan hinterland is the chalk to the Vegas cheese. There’s the Wild West terrain surrounding recreation centre Lake Tahoe  a stone’s throw from Reno and endless flat plateaus fenced by distant snowy mountain peaks. Outdoor enthusiasts will be in their element exploring the Lehman caves, biking the Red Rock Canyon and skiing down Mount Charleston. Good timers – stick to the casinos.

Essential Information

Las Vegas

Not even the Global Financial Crisis of 2008 could stop slot machine levers being yanked or chips being laid. To think it all started with illegitimate funds from Mormon bank accounts, went on to become a gangster’s lair, a den for fornicating celebrities (JFK and Elvis) and now a family friendly playground. What are the chances? Don’t confine yourself to lime lighters – the MGM Grands and the Bellagios of The Strip, or indeed your hotel. There’s better value for money options Downtown which should feature on your itinerary, there’s seriously cool features like the vintage slot machines of The D Las Vegas.

Lake Tahoe

The high Nevadan plateau is fenced in by mountains that glow red in the summer sun and age white in winter snows. Lake Tahoe is one big holiday oasis in a by-in-large arid land. Its southern shores are an empyrean of outdoor activity year round. In the summer it’s all about hanging on the beach, hiking and mountain biking its banks and kayaking and paddle boarding the open water. In the winter season the agenda switches to downhill skiing, cross country skiing, boarding, snowshoeing and dog sledding. The northern shores are more focused on a quiet alpine lifestyle, think romantic hotels, log lodgings and walks around the shores of the two million year old fresh water lake.

Forsaken and Forlorn

Lake Tahoe, Reno and Vegas are hives of activity but this is not typical Nevada. Most of it is a big empty. Strike out into the forlorn landscapes of the Great Basin; bloodshot layers of sandstone mountains in Red Rock Canyon and the mosaic floor of cracked mud in Black Rock Desert. Joshua trees stand around the Mojave Desert like stubby clay sculptures being fired in a kiln. Explore the hundreds of ghost towns, bereft of inhabitants a long time ago who left along with all their silver and gold. Nevada’s scenery has one phenomenon knitting it altogether: connotations of loneliness and solitude; as beautiful as they are heart wrenching.

Best Time to Travel

It’s the driest state in the United States with an average annual temperature of 22 degrees Celsius, excluding the Las Vegas Valley. Summers are very hot and winters very cold, so spring and autumn are the best time to holiday here weather wise. That said deals on flights and hotels can be found throughout the year. Accommodation prices are always lower mid-week since it’s a popular weekend destination. Thunderstorms are common at these this of year but if you’re spending all your time at the poker table, this’ll hardly matter.
