Miami Holidays

Sassy, superficial and unashamedly glamorous, the metropolis of Miami is famous for its party-hard beaches, hip art galleries, art deco architecture. If you want a lively holiday in Florida, this is the place to come – mainly because of Miami’s biggest vice: the nightlife.

Holidays in Miami

The sands of South Beach are lined by sherbet façades and topped with rooftop bars overlooking the dolphin frequented Biscayne Bay. A few steps back from the infamous shoreline and things start mutating. There are swanky restaurants with over obliging staff and restored art-deco hotels. Galleries compete with al-fresco street artists, there’s Coral Gables, Miami’s historic district and the trendy and hard-to-please Design District. An underpinning pan-Latin culture ties the whole scene together – the beach parties, the night clubs and the tropical heat – in Little Havana and Little Haiti. Step out of town and you’ll be in the Florida of old, Everglades National Park and the Atlantic Ocean are welcome relief when the ‘Magic City’ gets to be too much. Hike, bike and canoe your way through the ‘River of Grass’ to find crocodiles, waterfowl, manatees and dolphins in fire shaped pinelands, mangroves and marshlands.

Essential Information

Lively Nightlife

Here, the party animal has evolved into party beast.  Start with day drinks in Wynwood’s hip bars and restaurants. Then grab sun downers in the rooftop bars of South Beach and wind up blagging your way beyond the velvet ropes of VIP sections of downtown. Make sure you network with blinged up locals in the club queues to find out what celebrities are in town. Little Havana is popular for its live music dens, offhand cocktail bars and Cuban cafecitos served in cafe come bars. Alternatively, keep it close by and check your hotels schedule for adult only pool parties. Miami is renowned for all this, debauchery and more, a hand-me-down from the good old spring break days. But there is a calmer scene can be found in places like Brickell and Midtown where young professionals slow the pace in speak easies.

Everglades National Park

There are few cities that boast a vast biosphere reserve in such close proximity, even fewer have one dubbed something as poetic as ‘River of Grass’. Everglades National Park is a flooded lowland sprawl of wetlands, swamps, mangrove forests, prairie and grassland. It doesn’t sound like much but it's brimming with life. Canoes are one of the best ways to spot alligators and crocodiles – living dinosaurs that grin at the word extinct. Navigate mangrove swamps to spot West Indian manatees and bottlenose dolphins and the abundant water fowl that wade and plod in the wetlands for food. Take the road from Homestead to Flamingo stopping off to embark on hikes and trails – there are boardwalks and observation towers like the Shark Valley panorama. For diving and snorkelling, the best jump off point is The John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.

Art Deco Buildings

Holidaying in the Miami sun beseeches images of curving balconies and pastel coloured walls with neon signs hung out front. Take a hard look at the art deco styles of the American Riviera and you’ll notice whimsical features like porthole windows and old fashioned nautical gadgets. Then there’s the permeating sense of cool that hearkens to the days of vintage cars and classic movies. When you’ve familiarised yourself with the Miami Beach Architectural District, it’s time to discover the galleries, boutiques and stores off of the Biscayne Bay Road; more 1930’s immersion. Art Basel fair in December might be the hub of Miami’s style-moderne scene but there’s plenty to get stuck into year round. There’s Locust Projects, Fredric Snitzer Gallery and the Bass Museum of Art plus the street art in Wynwood Walls known as ‘The Gallery of the Streets’.

Best Time to Visit Miami

Miami has a tropical monsoon climate with two pronounced seasons; the hot and humid summer from May to mid October and the markedly drier and hot winter season from December to March. The best time to visit is the springtime – late March and early May after peak season when prices are cheaper and it’s not yet too humid. July to October is deep summer, prices plummet as it’s hurricane season.
