Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale Holidays

The international yachting scene and the bars and restaurants that come with it, plus the beaches of the Gold Coast, suffice to keep most activity by the seaside. Inland, however, is a waterway system that adds surprising depth of character and that favourite American past time: shopping.

Holidays in Fort Lauderdale

The coast is the centre of attention where cruise ships set off from the USA for exotic locations like the Caribbean Islands and Mexico. As such, top end restaurants and ritzy hotels that cater to the alighting super rich, mob the coast. For those of us on holiday that don’t own a yacht, well the coast is still the best place be. There’s no shortage of supply of beaches for sun bathing, beach volleyball, morning yoga sessions – whatever you please. The party hard Fort Lauderdale of the 1980’s is somewhat diminished but that doesn’t mean there’s no night owls left to have a good time with. The only difference is you’ll more likely find yourself at a jazz concert or art festival than you will a wet t-shirt contest. The Sawgrass Mills Shopping Centre, childishly but aptly shaped like an alligator, is well known for its quality merchandise and cheap prices.

Essential Information

It’s called the Gold Coast not because of the sands but because of the supposedly glamorous and glittering lifestyle that resides here. It should be named after the beaches. They appear everywhere – movies, TV shows, wedding albums and postcards. There’s so many they’ve been assigned roles – you can quite literally browse according to what activity you’re after. To name a few there’s the unspoilt coastline and nature can be found along John U. Lloyd Beach State Park and Hillsboro Beach, families will be better facilitated for at Deerfield and Pompano. Fort Lauderdale beach, once a Spring Break favourite, is now set up for snorkelling, boutique shopping and jet skiing.

Shops and Urban Waterways

The nickname ‘Venice of America’ is a stretch in anyone’s imagination. But the canals and waterways of the Greater Fort Lauderdale area do make for a peaceful and slower feel to what would otherwise be a bland place of glass and concrete. Coffees in waterside cafes and canal-side evening walks reveal a softer side to this metropolis. Cruise by the famous Millionaire’s Row on a water taxi and get acquainted with the yachting scene around Port Everglades. Hunt out designer labels, out of season stock and discontinued products in the Sawgrass Mills Shopping Centre which has more than 350 stores.

Tropical Recreation

Recreation and lush green spaces can be found a short way away from Fort Lauderdale. The neat and straight canal system of the city is juxtaposed with the haphazard routes of the Everglades waterways. Kayaking excursions and airboat tours are popular methods of traversing this swamp land infested with sawgrass that hides waterfowl, black panthers and amphibious creatures. The nocturnal excursions are a different experience altogether, the ribbits and croaks from frog’s throats make a din and torch light illuminates the watchful eyes of alligators. Those less keen to plunge into the wild wetlands can visit the Botanical Gardens and the Flamingo Gardens that have tram tours and wildlife sanctuaries.

Best Time to Travel

Fort Lauderdale has a tropical rainforest climate so there’s little variance in temperatures throughout the year. The May to October summer is hot and wet. Rains and thunderstorms arrive in the late afternoon though, which means that other than the hurricane season (June – November) Fort Lauderdale is good to visit year round. Expect more crowds from December to April and for cheap deals and bargains look in the late spring or early autumn. Be mindful of the Deep South’s many festivals and events like Mardi Gras that can ramp up flights and accommodation prices even outside of peak season.
