The Ultimate Travel Bucket List

Unfortunately, over the past couple of years, pandemic restrictions have taken foreign travel off the agenda for most of us. Whether you’ve had to put your Caribbean dream holiday on ice, kiss goodbye to your African wildlife adventure or put off that big once-in-a-lifetime trip Down Under, you’re no doubt itching to get away from it all by now. With travel restrictions easing, now’s the time to start thinking about finally taking that well deserved holiday.

Everyone has their own tastes when it comes to the perfect trip abroad. While some holidaymakers are thirsty for high-adrenaline activities, others love nothing more than a little self-care in the sun, sand and sea. Enriching cultural experiences are high up on many travellers’ wishlists too, while some sightseers are all about the natural beauty of a destination.

We’ve scored 15 different destinations against different criteria and awarded points for each, including opportunities for adventure, wildlife experiences, warm temperatures, and local food. The points for each destination were then added up and the below ranking tables were created. So, if you're looking for inspiration for your next big adventure, read on as we take a deep dive into some of the world’s top holiday destinations.

Adventure activities

Looking for experiences that will get your heart racing? Australia comes in at number one for high-stakes activities, and for good reason - there are so many adventures to be had in this part of the world that you’ll be spoiled for choice. Immerse yourself in the overwhelming beauty of the Great Barrier Reef on a snorkelling expedition, get up close and personal with a great white shark with a cage diving experience, or why not reach the summit of Sydney Harbour Bridge for the ultimate climbing experience? With so much to offer, Oz should be a must-visit on every thrill-seeker's bucket list.

Famed for its snow-covered mountains, verdant ancient rainforests, flowing rivers and deep freshwater lakes, Canada comes a very close second when it comes to thrill-seeking. This outdoor lover’s paradise offers ample opportunity for adrenaline-pumping activities. From mountain biking, to white-water rafting, to skiing, to hiking and more, you can create the perfect action-packed itinerary.

New Zealand is next in line for exciting escapades. Bring out your inner daredevil with a bungee jump, face your fears with a sky-dive, take in the dramatic vistas as you hurtle through the air on a zipline, or experience the magic of the glaciers by chopper with a heli-hike. Exotic wildlife

Want to take a walk on the wild side? Get closer to nature with a vacation that gives you a glimpse into the inner lives of wild animals.

At the top of the table for exotic wildlife lies Madagascar, which is home to some of the world’s rarest flora and fauna. In fact, thanks to the island’s distinct ecosystem, around 70% of its species can’t be found anywhere else on the planet. From lemurs, to chameleons, to fossas, to aye-ayes, there’s a whole host of wild and wonderful creatures to discover.

Next up is New Zealand, which is known as the seabird capital of the world and is home to a wide variety of native animals. Sneak a peek at the kiwi bird, a highly unusual flightless bird with a unique call that can be heard in the forests at dawn and dusk. Or check out the tuatara, a rare creature that belongs to an order of reptiles that thrived in the age of the dinosaurs. There are several unique species of marine life too, from Hector’s dolphins, to rare beaked whales to New Zealand sea lions.

There’s plenty of distinctive species to write home about in Australia too, including cuddly koalas, bouncing kangaroos, charismatic wallabies, shy wombats and cheeky Tasmanian devils.

The kaleidoscope-like nature of Madagascar’s scenery puts it in second position. With stunning beaches, deserts, rainforests and seascapes, this island packs a punch when it comes to impressive vistas.

Mongolia, in third place, offers diversity in terms of scenery too. Take in the rugged, untouched beauty of salt lakes, sand dunes, grasslands, gorges, forests, marshes, and mountain glaciers in a country that is a dream destination for lovers of the outdoors.
