Answer the call of the wild on one of our amazing Kenya safari holidays. With its diverse landscape, which ranges from the golden savannahs of the Masai Mara to the towering peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, Kenya is home to some of Africa’s most popular safari destinations. It remains one of the few places on earth where wildlife still exists in abundance, roaming freely in its natural habitat. As well as a number of different game reserves to choose from, there are camps and lodges to suit all budgets – so whatever kind of Kenya safari holiday you’re after, we’re sure to have just the thing. For an extra special experience, why not combine your safari holiday in Kenya with a tropical beach break? Once you’ve got your animal fix, head to the coastal city of Mombasa or hop on a short flight to an Indian Ocean island like Mauritius or the Seychelles.
Masai Mara is the ultimate destination for a Kenya safari holiday. Located in the southwest of the country, in the Great Rift Valley, it covers 1,510 square kilometers of rolling grassland. It shares an unfenced border with Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, meaning animals move freely between the two. Game viewing in the Masai Mara is excellent all year around. Its diverse population includes lions, leopards, elephants, buffalos, zebras, giraffes, hyenas and more. The best time for a Masai Mara safari is July to October, when the wildebeest migration takes place. This natural phenomenon sees almost two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle move across this part of the Masai Mara-Serengeti ecosystem in search of pasture and water. It’s one of the most incredible sights you could ever hope to see on a safari holiday in Kenya.
Although Amboseli National Park is only small (about 390 square kilometres), its wide open landscape makes for easy game spotting. It’s famous for being the best place in Africa to get close to large herds of wild elephants. While there are over 1,000 elephants in the park, these are by no means the only creatures you’ll see. Besides big cats and game animals, Amboseli National Park is also home to more than 400 bird species, including over 40 birds of prey. The southern boundary of the park is dominated by Mount Kilimanjaro – the highest mountain in Africa. Unfortunately cloud cover can sometimes render Kilimanjaro invisible, but fantastic photo opportunities are available when this clears – usually around dawn or dusk. This combination of incredible views and a high concentration of wildlife makes Amboseli National Park a great choice for a safari holiday in Kenya.
Safari holidays in Kenya don’t come much more picturesque than those spent in Lake Nakuru. Its combination of bushy grassland, euphorbia and acacia trees, and rocky escarpments is breathtakingly beautiful. The park’s defining feature is a large, shallow lake that was once the focal point of a stunning wildlife spectacle. Over two million flamingos used to congregate around Lake Nakuru to feed, turning the whole area awash with pink. However, since 2014, conditions have become unfavourable and flamingo numbers have sadly dwindled. Those that remain, though, are accompanied by other bird species, including pelicans, cormorants and kingfishers, as well as four of the 'Big Five'. While there aren’t any elephants in Lake Nakuru National Park, it’s home to both black and white rhinos, and the endangered Rothschild's giraffe.
If you’re after a Kenya safari holiday that combines wildlife with a city break, look no further. Just six miles south of downtown Nairobi, Nairobi National Park is the closest game reserve to Kenya’s capital. In fact it’s the only game reserve in the world that borders a capital city. The wide open plains are home to a large and varied wildlife population – and, in certain places, animals can viewed against a backdrop of the city’s nearby skyscrapers. Although the absence of elephants means it can’t be classified as a Big Five reserve, Nairobi National Park is one of the best places in East Africa for spotting black rhinos. Lions, cheetahs and leopards all roam here, but they’re not seen all that often – a bit of luck and patience are required if you’re to spot one of these infamous creatures.
