Patagonia is renowned as one of the great hiking destinations of the world. The area around Bariloche is one of the best places for hiking. It’s a popular base for long walks, trekking tours, and ski trips to the Cerro Catedral resort. During winter, Bariloche’s snowy mountain scenery, Swiss-style architecture and excellent skiing will make you feel like you’re staying in a European alpine town.

You should also head to the El Calafate region, where you can gape at the enormous Perito Moreno Glacier. Found on Lake Argentino and part of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, this bright blue glacier is impossibly vast. And it’s actually getting bigger – as it expands, you’ll often see pieces of ice crashing into the blue water below.

While you can cruise or kayak around the glacier, it’s also possible to set foot on the glacier to hike. Crush through the ice, and you’ll feel as though you’re in a winter wonderland. Don’t forget to breathe, soak in the spectacular scenery and pose for plenty of photographs.

A trip to Argentina wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the world-famous wine region of Mendoza. This area is filled with vineyards and wineries, which account for more than 60 per cent of Argentina’s wine. Embark on a wine tour and tasting session, and sip a glass of delicious malbec as you gaze out to the tall Andes on the horizon.

Between wine-tasting, don’t miss your chance to explore the actual city of Mendoza. This picturesque place is crammed with exciting museums, eccentric Art Deco buildings, and modern architecture.
