Feast on authentic Argentine steak and empanadas, and go on a wine-tasting tour in Mendoza
Discover Buenos Aires’ grand plazas, historical palace, quirky cemeteries and bright street art
The biggest Spanish-speaking country in the world, Argentina is a patchwork of landscapes. The rugged Atlantic coastline – which stretches for nearly 3,000 miles – has pockets of golden sand and pine-backed beaches. Inland, meanwhile, you’ll find neat vineyards, sprawling ranches, snow-dusted mountains and enormous glaciers. Whether you’re drawn to the varied scenery or the exciting cities, our Argentina holidays tick all the boxes.
It’s likely that your trip to Argentina will kick off in its vibrant capital, Buenos Aires. The home of the tango – and nearly three million people – Buenos Aires is romantic and lively in equal measure. You can expect to find French-inspired architecture, historical plazas and colourful barrios with bright street art. Take a tour of the presidential palace, Casa Rosada, and marvel at the ornate mausoleums in Recoleta Cemetery. And foodies will be delighted by the city’s freshly-baked empanadas, juicy steaks and Argentine barbecue, called asado.
But if it’s wine you’re after, make tracks for Mendoza. This famous region produces about 80 per cent of Argentina’s wine, most notably its full-bodied malbec. Tour a vineyard – there are more than 1,500 – to learn about the vine-to-wine process and enjoy a tasting session. Or, for another insight into rural Argentina, spend time at a traditional ranch, an estancia, and watch highly-skilled gauchos herd cattle across the rolling plains. Why not stay for a couple of days to find out more about Argentina’s legendary cowboys, go horse riding, and enjoy some delicious home cooking?
Argentina holidays are ideal for nature-lovers, too. In the north, at the Brazilian border, you can marvel at UNESCO-stamped Iguazu Falls, where 275 waterfalls thunder through tropical forest. Or head south to Patagonia. Shared with Chile, this dramatic region serves up all sorts of wonders. You can hike through Argentina’s beautiful Lake District, explore the alpine town of Bariloche, and be amazed by the jaw-dropping glaciers and mountains of Los Glaciares National Park.
After a jam-packed trip, Argentina’s balmy beaches are the perfect place to unwind. Bustling Mar del Plata is the most popular beach resort, while forest-lined Pinamar and sleepy Miramar offer a quieter escape. Or why not hop over to Brazil and spend a few days relaxing on Rio de Janeiro’s beaches, such as Copacabana or Ipanema? However you want to spend your time, our Travel Specialists will help you plan the perfect holiday to Argentina.
Live like a local in Argentina’s capital, Buenos Aires, which is known for its vibrant nightlife. You must watch a dance show in the ‘tango capital of the world’, where the glamorous costumers and beautifully streamlined moves will leave you spellbound.
And meat-eaters can rejoice, as Argentina serves up some of the best and most affordable steak in the world. There are various award-winning restaurants in Buenos Aires, where you can eat to your heart’s content.
As well as high-quality restaurants and fabulous dancing, Buenos Aires is home to a colourful artistic quarter, lively nightclubs and countless bars for a night – or several – to remember.
Patagonia is renowned as one of the great hiking destinations of the world. The area around Bariloche is one of the best places for hiking. It’s a popular base for long walks, trekking tours, and ski trips to the Cerro Catedral resort. During winter, Bariloche’s snowy mountain scenery, Swiss-style architecture and excellent skiing will make you feel like you’re staying in a European alpine town.
You should also head to the El Calafate region, where you can gape at the enormous Perito Moreno Glacier. Found on Lake Argentino and part of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, this bright blue glacier is impossibly vast. And it’s actually getting bigger – as it expands, you’ll often see pieces of ice crashing into the blue water below.
While you can cruise or kayak around the glacier, it’s also possible to set foot on the glacier to hike. Crush through the ice, and you’ll feel as though you’re in a winter wonderland. Don’t forget to breathe, soak in the spectacular scenery and pose for plenty of photographs.
A trip to Argentina wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the world-famous wine region of Mendoza. This area is filled with vineyards and wineries, which account for more than 60 per cent of Argentina’s wine. Embark on a wine tour and tasting session, and sip a glass of delicious malbec as you gaze out to the tall Andes on the horizon.
Between wine-tasting, don’t miss your chance to explore the actual city of Mendoza. This picturesque place is crammed with exciting museums, eccentric Art Deco buildings, and modern architecture.
A cruise in Antarctica is like no other. On our 13-day tour of this frozen wonderland, you’ll glide through the icy waters. Keep an eye out for a plethora of marine wildlife as you go, including penguins, seals, whales and seabirds.
If you’re brave enough, take a polar plunge into the chilly waters for a memorable travel experience. Other highlights include visiting an abandoned whaling station, and a working research facility where you can learn more about the surrounding winter wonderland.
Antarctica is also the ideal place to practice your photography with its abundant wildlife, frozen glaciers and polar-blue seas.
