Things to do in Mexico

Beach Bliss

What do you look for in a beach? Powder-soft sand? Bath-warm waters? Glorious sunshine? In Mexico, you’ll get all three. The country’s two very different coastlines have every kind of beach you can imagine, from sleepy coves to popular surf spots. On the Caribbean side, you’ll find the famous areas of Cancun, Tulum and Isla Mujeres, while the Pacific Coast is home to the jungle-backed beaches of Puerto Vallarta. Toddlers and younger kids will love paddling in the shallow, calm waters of Isla Mujeres – and there are plenty of restaurants for lunch. Meanwhile, buzzing Cancun is kitted out for children of all ages, with water slides and swimming pools. Older kids and teens can try snorkelling and surfing, too. The range of choice in Mexico is truly endless, so you’ll have no problem finding the best beach for you and your family.

Captivating Culture

Mexico has over 30,000 archaeological sites, spanning the length of the country. Of those, 174 are open to the public. Many countries keep their historical monuments at a distance from visitors, but Mexico gives tourists the opportunity to get up close to their ancient temples. Chichen Itza is probably the most famous, and is easily accessed from Cancun and Playa del Carmen – there are lots of tours on offer, with English-speaking guides available. Some temples – like the one in Uxmal, for example – can even be climbed if your family is feeling up to the challenge. Near Mexico City, meanwhile, you can visit one of the most famous and important of these ancient structures – Tenochtitlan, the ancient capital of the Aztec Empire. Whichever one you visit, these incredible sites will fill the whole family with wonder.

Activities and Adventures

If Mexico’s culture, history and beaches aren’t enough to tempt you, you might be surprised to know that Mexico also offers some fantastic adventure experiences. Your family will have the opportunity to explore hidden underwater cave pools, snorkel with wild sea turtles, and zip-line across the rainforest canopy. Discover beautiful cenotes – hidden pools created by underground rivers in the Yucatán Peninsula – which are the perfect place to go for a cooling dip after a day in the sun. Or, why not take a Mexican cooking class to perfect your enchilada-making skills, to recreate the delicious flavours back home? All this and so much more awaits on your family holiday to Mexico.
